If you read Psalm 22, it may answer the question, or at least start a line of inquiry.

David expresses his trust in God in spite of the apparent rejection by God and by men. And so the cry could be considered yet another proclamation that Jesus is the Christ.

I think it also signifies that at that point Christ took on Himself the sins of humanity, and that sin separated Him from the Father, as it had separated man from God until that moment.

He's quoting from, and of course alluding to the rest of, Psalm 22. Which is exactly where God's servant should go when faced with the suffering with which he is faced at that point.
