Why doesn't prayer work?

It took me YEARS to see why I wasn't able to move on and my husband either. I don't mean a couple either.

You're not a failure!! Success starts with a state of mind. I know that it seems like God isn't listening to you but He is and you have to hope in Him! Somebody said "The man who believes he can do something is probably right, and so is the man who believes he can't."

In your first post you said that all your friends have their prayers answered immediately. How do you know that? Their prayer life may not be as amazing as it seems to you. God says "no" to everyone. You also said in your first post that you can't find the point in praying at night anymore. There is point, even if He is saying no to your prayers! Prayer is taking to God. And the more you talk to somebody, the more you know him.

I'm not sure why God is saying no to so many of your prayers, but it may just be that what you're asking for doesn't align with His will and plan for your life. Or maybe it's just how you're praying? Have you said the sinner's prayer (the prayer when you repent and give your life to Christ to live a life that pleases Him) and meant it? How do you pray and who and what do you pray for? If you don't mind, can you post an example of one of your prayers? Perhaps that will help us identify and fix a possible problem.

It is like I am stuck. No up or down. I thank God for what I do have. I pray for what is my purpose on the Earth.... Still nothing.

Prayer is a way for us to talk to Jesus. The only way to Heaven is through Jesus. Just the way it is. I have seen the power of prayer, and I have seen when prayers I have been asking for specific blessing, for a number of years, literally, have not been answered. If it is His will, then so shall it be. His schedule is not the same as mine. He decides when or if I get the blessing I ask for.

That is so beautiful!

A year ago I was homeless. I prayed and asked Jesus for blessings and miracles. Finding a place to rent would take a miracle. I didn't just find a place to rent, I found a place to buy. I now have a home. THAT was a miracle! I was also dealing with serious health problems, because Systemic Lupus is in my family. I have always tested negative for Lupus, but I had the liver damage. And I have been dry (alcohol) since '93. Last week my doctor tested me and found out that the damage is gone. Not just "better", but GONE. And I hadn't prayed for that! I just asked for better health. Tell me, is that a miracle, or what? The liver can fix itself, but when dealing with SLE, it's not as capable to fix itself.

But it did.

THAT is a miracle!

Stop Being Conscious Of All Your Self-called Failures And Be Christ Conscious! Stop Doing All These Things You Are Doing And Just Relax And Feed On The Word Of God. Only One Thing Is Needful-feed On The Word Of God And He Will Do All The Rest!

You can't because that is how others value you. Not being on that level like everyone else makes me look bad as if I am a loser or something. It is the truth. I even told God about something like this...

Congrats on having your prayers answered..
Me on the other hand....I get the dial tone.
Right now I have not prayed in like a day or so. I forgot.... I feel a tad bit better knowing that I will not be hit with an unanswered prayer.
I dunno I might pray tonight.

I feel like you're setting yourself up for dissapointment. I mean, when you pray, are you saying something while in the back of your mind you're expecting it not to be answered? That doesn't seem like a very good formula.

I've had a plenty of prayers gone unanswered. I found out that someone I cared deeply about had cancer. I prayed that God would heal them, that they could continue living. Well, that didn't happen, they died. And for awhile I was really frustrated, very confused. I saw no reason why God wouldn't answer that prayer - I mean, why not? To this day I'm not entirely sure, but I have come to a place of peace, in that I trust it was for the best.

We'll never be able to see God's plan for our lives in its entirety, or how all of His decisions work together for our good. That's part of faith - trusting in what is unseen. I can't blame you for feeling bad about this, but just know that God doesn't withold things from us without good reason. I will certainly be praying for you.

If you ever want to talk, feel free to PM me.

Thank you!

You "might" pray tonight, huh? Well, I suppose He "might" help you.

Amen to that. My prayers sometimes take years to be answered and not in always the way I expected and on top of that, sometimes it take years to realize they've been answered.

Everytime I pray for something nothing happens. Other people I know pray and their prayers get answered. I am falling behind and failing at life when it comes to my peers and relatives. I think that I waste my time praying at night.

All prayer is answered, sometimes the answer is Yes, No or not yet.

God is not a magic genie deisgned to grant your every wish. The answer is sometimes No. The Faith part comes in believeing that there is a God who knows more than you and trusting that there is a good reason for whatever answer you receive. If you did not believe there was a God (who had power you did not) why did you pray?

Some quotes from The God Who Risks, by John Sanders (pp. 272 and 273):

(There's a ton more I want to say on this topic, and this quote is just kind of something I remembered off the top of my head, and I'm not saying I necessarily agree with everything this guy writes because I haven't read all his works but yeah)
“God wants us to be His partners not because He needs our wisdom, but because He wants our fellowship…Our requests are important because God is interested in us. God loves us and takes our concerns to heart just because they are our concerns. This is the nature of a personal, loving relationship.

The relationship is not one of domination or manipulation but of participation and cooperation wherein we become co-laborers with God (1 Cor. 3:9)…It is so only because God wanted a reciprocal relationship of love and elected to make dialogical prayer an important element in such a relationship.”

“God has open routes into the future, and He desires that we participate with Him in determining which ones to take. This should not be construed, however, to mean that we get whatever we want. We may prevail with God because God genuinely takes our desires into account. Yet God may also prevail with us, getting us to change our minds and pursue a course of action that we did not initially think best. In this regard, prayer provides a dialogical resource for God to work in this world.

When we turn to God in prayer, we open a window of opportunity for the Spirit’s work in our lives, creating new possibilities for God to carry out His project. Dialogical prayer affects both parties and changes the situation, making it different from what it was prior to the prayer…Our asking in faith may make it possible for God to do something that He could not have done without our asking.”

Statement of Purpose

Christian Advice is a non-debate area where one may come to ask for Christian advice to a struggle they are encountering. Christian Advice is a Christian-Only area, but non-Christians may ask questions seeking for advice of a Christian nature. Christian advice is defined as advice which contains basic Christian principles and does not conflict with the site's Statement of Faith.

Christian Advice is not a debate forum, nor is it a place to discuss theology. There are other forums dedicated to that purpose.
