Hey everyone. It is my understanding that Iran funds and supports Hamas. However, this makes no sense to me because it is my understanding that Iran is a Shiite nation whereas Hamas is a Sunni organization. Why would a Shiite nation support a Sunni organization?

Iran wants to destroy Israel anything that promotes that destruction is considered worthy of their support

Iran's political/religious sees itself as the ideal Muslim nation. While the average Iranian could care less, the Iranian leadership are intent on destroying Israel. Hamas shares the same ideals. In the unlikely event that they succeed, I would imagine that Iran would take steps to deal with Hamas next.

Iran also supported the Hezbollah Shiite movement in Lebanon. The Hezbollah opened fire on Israel during the summer of 2016. I was touring Galilee when the conflict started. The Hezbollah were firing rockets into Israel. One hit Nazareth, another hit Tiberias during Shabbat. Some women and children were evacuated from the border areas to hotels in the south.

For the same reasons Roman Catholicism and the Byzantine empire supported each other sometimes during the Crusades I imagine. It's similar, I imagine and will probably work about as well in the end.

Crusades - Wikipedia

Oh! Wait! We got a Holy Lance!
"The discovery of the Holy Lance by mystic Peter Bartholomew may have boosted the morale of the Crusaders."

Cool...
Holy Crap. That's the Spear of Destiny...
Where'd you put that thing? We can't have that just lying around.

Quite simply it does not support them. It used to before the Syrian Civil War but when Hamas failed to support Assad Iran cut off the funding. Egypt under the Muslim Brotherhood also supported them and allowed tunnels under the Israeli border. When they got rid of Morsi the tunnels were destroyed. Qatar and Turkey provide most of the funding now.

The Palestinians are a political football backed by whichever Muslim power benefits from their anti- Zionist philosophy. The prime Sunni power is Saudia Arabia and they want nothing to do with Hamas.

Interesting. Qatar has given money to the Palestinian Authority so that they can reward the families of murdering terrorists. I did not know about Turkey's involvement. Is it official or Turks raising money for the cause? It's a mess because Turkey is mostly Sunni, as is Qatar.

I believe it's Hezbollah that the Iranians have been implicated in supporting.

There are shi'ite minorities in almost every Muslim country.
