Why do YE Creationists insist on a simplistic literal reading of the bible?

Well, I must have not been at the meeting where everyone decided Noah's Ark was fake. Sorry, missed that one, so I'll stick with the belief that it happened.

It happened long before you were born. So do you believe in Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny too? There is no real difference between those beliefs and yours.

They found evidence and they decided randomly to switch from believing God to believing what they thought was evidence?

What do you men "believing God"? They decided not to believe a book written by dyspetic sheep herders that has hundreds of self contradictions in it and if anything they decided to believe what God actually wrote.

Perhaps some of them thought Noah was God?

Because it is based on verifiable evidence (the dating) it is very different.

But, I understand this is not something you can accept, because it goes against your holy book. So, believe what you choose to believe.

This is only verifiable within the system you believe to work.

The Holy Bible goes against your scientific dating system as much as the opposite.

So whatever YOU believe is true?

Brian,

You haven't been following along have you?

If a math book says 2+2=4 and the bible says 2+2=5, it is clear, you would throw out the math book and go with the bible.

If it works for you, then knock yourself out.

I'm not claiming anything. Do you have any specific reason why you believe that it's impossible to determine dates using dating methods? If you believe we can't do it, that's fine, but is your belief in a literal interpretation of Genesis the only reason, or do you feel there's some flaw in the way dating is done?

It all stems from the Word of God. You seems to think I need to deeply study something before not believing it. Sorry, but I haven't deeply studied dating systems that claim billions of years. When I said I wonder how the calibration works, I was really wondering how one can calibrate something over a period of a few years that is designed to measure billions. That seems like making a speedometer that is designed for speeds up to mach-10 and calibrating it at 2 mph and calling it proof.

Let's say that you're one of these scientists, and you study the Earth under the assumption that it's 6,000 years old. You fully expect it to confirm your beliefs...but the results don't do it. You check it again and again and again. You check with others. You go over your findings. You labor for years, trying to get this puzzle piece to fit - but it won't. It just won't.

You want it to fit your notion, but it doesn't. What do you do in this scenario?

My first thought would be to rethink the equipment and methods behind the dating.

People claim contradictions all the time but I have yet to see a real contradiction in Scripture.

What is the point of playing "What if the Bible did this" games? The Bible says what the Bible says...

Just as much as those who are certain of no religious beliefs. You separate theists from atheists, since you fall into the latter category. I separate Christians from non-Christians in the same way.

Why are you avoiding my question? Do you agree that most people of faith are deluded... that their beliefs are misdirected? Yes or no, please.

I don't play word games, meaning if someone words a question in a strange way so that I think a simplistic answer would not accurately convey what I believe, I won't answer in that simplistic of a way. There are books out there on designing those strangely worded questions.

I will answer you by saying that anyone who disbelieves the Bible has misdirected beliefs, including those whose faith is solely in science, as that takes just as much faith.

My apologies for not having specifics. Anything developed within the past hundred or so years that claims it can accurately date something millions and billions of years old seems at least as far fetched to me as others claim the Bible seems to them.

Why is it far fetched? What is it about the methods used to date rocks that you find so problematic?
