Jesus says when 2 or 3 gathered Prayers will be answered and also in the 10 commandment it says we are to love our nieghbours like ourselfs. I love to pray for people and it gives me joy to not focus on myself but for others. Praying for others to God is not a waste no matter how things turn out God is in Control always and how he decides to answer may not be how we want it to turn out. God always has a plan and purpose. Prayer is a powerful thing and when we get discourage look in the bible and the 10 commandments.

God Bless

Because God, in many ways, is realtionship. Prayer is part of our relationship with God. In fact, it is one of the largest and most important parts.

As we love others and pray for them we are all joined through that love. All in one realtionship with God. Both unified and unique at the same time.

Prayer can be the love of God and the Love of each other in God holding us all together, no matter what our differences.

Prayer is relationship. With God. With Each other in God's love.

St. Theophan the Recluse wrote:

“The root of this life is a free and conscious relationship with God, which then directs everything “It is the practice of prayer that expresses this free and conscious attitude towards God, just as the social contacts of daily life express our moral attitude towards our neighbor, and our ascetic struggles and spiritual efforts express our moral attitude towards ourselves. Our prayer reflects our attitude towards God, and our attitude to God is reflected in prayer.”

If our prayer reflects our attitude toward God, let it contain prayers for others. Let it be reverant, filled with awe and comsume us.

Prayers, like love, must seek to leave none behind and have as their source and summit of love, the Lord our God.

And Scripture tells us to "Pray for one another" (James 5:16)

Prayer can also be used by God to soften us, and make us more aware of our fellow-man. When I pray for someone, I am made more aware of how vulnerable all of us are, and how much we rely upon God for every thing. When I pray for my enemy (or just some irritating person at work), it may not change that person.. but it certainly changes me and how I see that person. God works through our prayers.

For me prayer for others becomes an outpouring of the spirit given to me, that which we know of as love. Love in this form cannot keep silent and must be brought forth into this realm out of thought and into action, the thought being love itself or the initial desires, while the action is the actual act of prayer for another itself.

Its like a ballon thats filled with air continually. As Gods love pours into us we either have one of 3 choices: pop, grow bigger, or let some of the air out. Prayer is that letting out of the air into other ballons so they too can grow and mature. Bringing into all things the fullness of Gods goodness and grace.
Or better yet those champagne glass fountains you see with 100 cups stacked ontop of each other in a pyramid. As the champagne is poued into the first glass it becomes full and pours over into each subsequent glass. This to me is the nature of Gods love. Through prayer we overflow what was given to us into others, we, like the glasses cannot do anything but overflow if filled.

Why do we pray for one another?

We are lifting our prayers to God for each other, while exercising our hope and faith in Him to intervene for us and others in a difficult situation.

For me, prayer time to God, our Father, is also a time for thanksgiving for Jesus.

Sometimes, prayer time for others is for them to be blessed, even our enemies.

No, this has NOTHING to do with the communion of the Saints, nor was this OP crafted in response to recent threads, in fact I would ask that it not be brought up.
When I was protestant the word "mercy" always conjured up the image "not recieveing punishment" or "dont beat me".... however when I found the orthodox faith the word mercy does not mean the same thing as in the western mind...in the Eastern Orthodox faith via the greek language "mercy" means, I believe, an act of pouring oil over the head for healing or annointing...in this context prayer for others as in "Lord have mercy on Joe or Sally" one is praying that God pour the oil of His grace over such and such.... this a Jesus Christ approved prayer "Lord have mercy"....

Why do we pray for others? To heal our own iniquities, help us to see our own sins and humble ourselves before God and man...
