Why do we feel so bad when we sin..?

I am a fairly new christian, again, after backsliding for a long time. My question is, Why do we feel so bad when we sin? Is it our conscience, the holy spirit, misplaced guilt? I know when I do something wrong, I feel terrible till I confess, and there is always something new coming up that I know I should work upon. I can't say that I am feeling guilty over nothing, I am working on things that a definatly wrong, but nothing out the ordinary as well. When does it end? It is hard and a bit stressful. I did much worse things when I was backsliding, and I felt nothing (though now I realize that the depression I felt came from not following God), now I feel everying.
I can say I have never felt closer to God, but never so convicted as well, not a great feeling (the conviction, not the closeness).
Sorry in advance for such a silly question.

as Staind said, it's like pain in physical body.. without pain, we wouldn't know what's wrong with it.

sanctification is a never ending process. Believing in Him and being saved by faith through grace flows on that us as christians would exhibit Christ like characteristics (fruits of Holy Spirit). Though it might seem painful, I hope you'll experience the joy in your God changing life. Remember that we're saved. We should be joyful! Christ comes to bring us an abundant life.. being a christian isn't just about feeling guilty to the point that sin weights you down, but knowing and accepting that Christ has freed us from sin, has forgiven us... and move on..

being convicted -> process of changing (joy, relief).. it's all mixed in together.

Yes. We need to know that our sinful behavior is unacceptable to God. Guilt and conviction is meant to bring us back to the foot of the cross, and ask forgiveness. After we've done that though, we can still feel rotten about what we did and who we are. That is our enemy trying to trash the life we have because he knows he cannot take it away.

The Spirit tells us, we know innately, and through other means. Sin is evil, and we are created to be good. Anytime we do something we aren't supposed to, we know it. Tell me a giraffe would feel good and well if it were thought to be a cow and milked :p

Yes, I do know all of this, I just never expected to feel like this. I wonder sometimes where it comes from. I feel fine after I confess. The sense of feeling bad when I do something wrong is enough to stop me from doing it even though I am tempted to.
Kind of like, if I do something wrong, not only do I feel guilty and wrong and ashamed, but I also have to confess it , try to fix the problem and not do it again. Not much fun, KWIM.
