I am a fairly new christian, again, after backsliding for a long time. My question is, Why do we feel so bad when we sin? Is it our conscience, the holy spirit, misplaced guilt? I know when I do something wrong, I feel terrible till I confess, and there is always something new coming up that I know I should work upon. I can't say that I am feeling guilty over nothing, I am working on things that a definatly wrong, but nothing out the ordinary as well. When does it end? It is hard and a bit stressful. I did much worse things when I was backsliding, and I felt nothing (though now I realize that the depression I felt came from not following God), now I feel everying.
I can say I have never felt closer to God, but never so convicted as well, not a great feeling (the conviction, not the closeness).
Sorry in advance for such a silly question.

Ah, the answer is that once you are saved, the Holy Spirit dwells within you. Some call the Holy Spirit the Still Small Voice. When you greive the Holy Spirit, you feel it.

People who aren't saved, don't quite feel sin the way we do. I'm not exactly sure why that is. But a backsliding Christian will feel bad when they sin much more than an unsaved person will. The unsaved very often don't know what all the fuss is about. Totally clueless as to why things bother us and don't bother them.

I'm not sure why. God's plan to keep us on the right path maybe.

Sorry in advance for such a silly question.

It's not a silly question, actually it's a good one, especially if you are new to the Chritian life.

Do you have a best friend? If so, imagine having an argument with them. How do you feel? Ususally we feel pretty bad. Well this is similiar with God. He is our best (of the best) friend and when we sin we break fellowship with Him. It hurts us and it grieves Him. But it is also a good thing because God can use that to bring us back into fellowship.
1John 1:9 tells us that if we confess our sin He is faithful to forgive us and to cleanse us. I have been taught that the word "confess" in this verse in the original Greek had a legal meaning. That is, to cite or name the case. So confession isn't about feeling sorry or getting all "shame on me" sort of attitude but rather agreeing with God about our wrong and naming it for what it is. Once we do that God is faithful in His mercy and He also cleanses us from all our sin. This means even the ones we didn't know about at the time. In this way our fellowship (friendship) is restored and we can move on with our walk.
It is important not to get hung up on the "bad feelings" but rather to dwell on what God has said instead. Too often people get down on themselves for not being all they think they should be. You must remember that there is nothing you can think, do or say that God doesn't already know about and that all our sin has already been judged. What grieves the Spirit is not our sin per se but rather it is our broken friendship.
Try not to worry too much about what you perceive as sin in your life, rather, concentrate on your relationship with God. His ways are not ours, nor His thoughts. Sometimes the things we think we need to change are not as important as the things God knows need to be changed.
Rom.5:1 Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ:
So then, be at peace. Take one day at a time and let the Spirit lead you. Enjoy the life Christ has won for you. :)

Yes, I do know all of this, I just never expected to feel like this. I wonder sometimes where it comes from. I feel fine after I confess. The sense of feeling bad when I do something wrong is enough to stop me from doing it even though I am tempted to.
Kind of like, if I do something wrong, not only do I feel guilty and wrong and ashamed, but I also have to confess it , try to fix the problem and not do it again. Not much fun, KWIM.
I however, would never go back to where I was before, would rather move forward with God.

Thats not a silly question at all..
I think sometimes we feel bad when we sin because I think the Holy Spirit within us, in a sense is checking us, and letting us know that what we did or what we want to do is wrong and we know it.
Does that make sense?

Just another slant on the same question, am now wondering; what is it that people without the Holy Spirit within them (the unsaved) hear and feel when they do wrong and feel bad about it? It is merely a conciouseness? Or maybe the Holy Spirit calling to the unsaved? Or do we as Christians mistake our conciousness for the Holy Spirit sometimes?

Hi,

It is the Holy Spirit that convicts us and the unbeliever. Yet hearts can get hardened to these things for both as well. Here is the scripture:

The Work of the Holy Spirit

5"Now I am going to him who sent me, yet none of you asks me, 'Where are you going?' 6Because I have said these things, you are filled with grief. 7But I tell you the truth: It is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Counselor will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you. 8When he comes, he will convict the world of guilt[1] in regard to sin and righteousness and judgment: 9in regard to sin, because men do not believe in me; 10in regard to righteousness, because I am going to the Father, where you can see me no longer; 11and in regard to judgment, because the prince of this world now stands condemned.

Yes, are we renaming the conciouseness within ourselves the Holy Spirit? Things are different now that I am a Christian, but I do wonder sometimes if this new found conviction is from me or the Holy Spirit. I do know what God say about it via the Bible, and I know that what I am convicted are things that are wrong.

I have been thinking about what you have said and I think the reason is because we fail to truly comprehend how God sees the situation. The reason we come to Jesus in the first place is because we recognise we are sinners. But once we believe on Him then:
Rom.8:1 "There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus."
We need to change the way we think about who and what we are. This doesn't come "naturally" because the sin nature still lives within us and the sin nature follows after the thinking style of Satan who is the "accuser of the brethren".
Rom.12:2 "And do not be conformed to this world, (Satan's/sin nature mindset) but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, (change the way you think) that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God."
Now this can only come about as we study the scriptures for it is in here that "the will of God" is made known to us.
John 1:1 "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God."
John 1:14 "And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth."
We might say that Jesus is the mindset of God. Jesus is the way God thinks and acts in a world that has rebelled against Him. It is to this way of thinking that we are called and if we are walking by faith and allowing the Holy Spirit to rule our lives then:
2Cor.3:18 "But we all, with unveiled face, beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory, just as by the Spirit of the Lord."
At first it is confusing because we are just not accustomed to this sort of life. The life of Christ is very different to the life that each of us has lived "in the flesh". And as a believer we have two opposing "lives" at work within us. But we have no need to be confounded by this because:
1John 2:2 "And He Himself is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the whole world."
So we live (by faith) as people who are dead to sin, that is, as if there is no sin in our lives and that we are indeed holy and blameless.
Rom.6:11 "Likewise you also, reckon yourselves to be dead indeed to sin, but alive to God in Christ Jesus our Lord."
Because now we are new creatures.
2Cor.5:17 "Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new."
This is a newness that is completely different from what you were before not just an "improvement" on what you were. We are not "later models" of humanity we are a brand new species. This is how God sees the picture and we should too. Now, what we are, will not be revealed completely until Christ returns for us and we have recieved our resurrection bodies. But until that day comes we should be learning to live as God has made us to be and not as the sin nature within tries to tell us.

Kind of like, if I do something wrong, not only do I feel guilty and wrong and ashamed, but I also have to confess it , try to fix the problem and not do it again. Not much fun, KWIM.

If you are feeling guilty and ashamed then you are living by your "flesh" and not by the Spirit. Most of us think we have cause for guilt and shame after we have done something wrong but this is the cart before the horse. We begin life in guilt and shame and it is the coming of the Light of Christ that reveals it to us. So it is your shame and guilt you need to confess, then the wrongdoing that you do will begin to lessen.
Remember it is written, there is no condemnation anymore if you believe in Christ, so if feelings of guilt and shame come to you then they come from your flesh and not from the Holy Spirit. God does not condemn you, you should not condemn yourself. You are not greater than God.

Do you know there are over 7,000 promises in the scriptures? That gives you about 20 promises for each day of the year to thank God for. You won't have time to think about sinning. :D

Be at peace sweetie, The Lord is able to do far more than you and I can even imagine. You learnt the "three R's" as a kid, now learn the "three L's" as a believer... "Look, Listen and Lean" on Jesus. Look to Him, listen to His Word and depend upon the Life He lives in you. It gets easier and way more fun than any other path you could follow. :D

I think that before, you were just covering up your God-given-conscience and the Holy Spirit that talks to you through it. Now, you can feel everything because you are out of that hole that you were first in. It will hurt for quite a while but eventually it will fade. With all things it takes time. We, as humans, never forget the bad things that we have done, but God does. Just remember when you feel real guilty, God sees you as clean.
