  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Why do we care whether God created us or god guided our evolution. What will we get out of it if eitherside is proven right? Will they win a prize? I don't get it, why is it important. Why aren't we focusing on the here and now, things that actually affect us. Is it about pride? If so, isn't pride a deadly sin?
Why is it so impotant?

I care about finding out the truth because I dislike uncertainty.

I care about stopping creationism because many people are being lied to.

It's important because fundamentalist christians are attacking the American way of life and one way they're doing it is thru this controversy. If they can get creation taught in schools as science they will have succeeded in placing their beliefs into the public school cirriculum. Further, they will be validating their Bible and the literal interpretation of it.

They've taken over the Republican party, the congress and the presidency. Now all that's left are the courts... Let this happen unopposed and soon lawmakers will be telling scientists what to study and what they should find when they study it.

It's not pride, it's about power.

And don't feel all happy because you might be a Christian. If these fundies get their way it won't be long before they're coming after those who aren't "true christians".

I wish it were that simple... but this is being marketed to Americans as a "good thing." Christians, who are the vast majority in this country, see the word 'Christian' and vote that way... Not knowing what they're really supporting.

It really is a shame more Americans don't get facts... I think people should take a test before they vote ;)

I think its a great question: Why worry about evolution/creationism?

People get misled that the answer is what we should be worried about--- but that is not the case, it is the process that matters.

Creationists get caught up in using Christ and God as a tool toward truth, they seek truth with such zealotry, they forget Christ and Christianity is a Choice, not a set of dogmatic rules.

Evolutionists are just simply on the path-- there is nothing wrong with that per se, just as long as they keep growing and questioning. And pressure themselves to be empathetic and human and Christ like in the process.

What path? I'm an adherent to evolutionary theory (I don't like the word 'evolutionist'; sounds like a life-defining, oath-pledging, cult-type-thing). I know nothing of this path. I don't have to pressure myself to be considerate; It seems to be coded in me.

ishmaelChrist is not in the facts, but in the choices you make. I view empathy as a skill, if you feel you're "coded" to be good, that's wonderful. I'm sure if you worked on it, you'd be even better at it. If you use Christ's message you'd be even better than that.
Evolution involves a processing of facts.
Christ involves a processing of choices.

Creationists confuse the latter with the former.
Those who realy souly on scientific analysis (is that better?) simply need to remember there is more to being humand than facts-- choices are what makes us ethical, moral and unique, we are more than mere "thermostats" on a wall.

Lets take your quote Phred and change Christians with say African-Americans

"but this is being marketed to Americans as a "good thing." African-Americans, who are the minority in this country, see the words 'Black candidate' and vote that way... Not knowing what they're really supporting.

or Asians or Mexicans or gays..yet no one has a problem with this..its only when non-thinking Christians vote as a block then you have a problem with it...So what good is a vote if anyone can supercede the laws like a mayor(s)defying the Law and a ratified proposition by marrying gays..but thats ok with you because us stupid Christians being the majority are really dumb blobs and
are homophobes and shouldn't have a say in society or schools...how come we don't have a consensus across the board if Christians are the majority and vote as a bloc like you suggest?...
Your bias is very obvious...Could it be possible that many who vote..vote with their conscience AND understand the issues such that the proevo forces are left to using the courts to promote their minority agenda?..how about that scenario?

My life, devoted to neither Christ nor evolutionary theory, involves enough processing of facts and choices for me as it is. I make choices based on the facts, the facts being those things that are most demonstrably accurate to me. I find that when I make choices based on conclusions that I've drawn without supporting evidence, they are rarely good choices. Downright irrational usually.

Of course, just like you want your beliefs taught. That is why we have ways in this country for people to work out their differences. At least it has been that way sense 1776 when the deists took over the country or at last the governement of this country. They have been feeding us propaganda ever sense about what a wonderful job they are doing of runnnig the show.

I have a major problem with that. It's stupid, it's annoying, and it's really racist. I hate politicians kissing up to the christian lobby while ignoring the words of Jesus, but other hypocrites are no better.
