I mean, sure....I understand that it is "good" that Jesus died to save us from our sins and take the penalty for our sins upon Himself and all that......

But, it certainly was not a "Good Friday" over 2,000 years ago for His mother, Mary....
.....or for His disciples.....
......or for Mary Magdalene.....
........or for Judas Iscariot.....
..........or for the two thieves on either side of Him....
............or for probably a lot of other people who must remain nameless.....

Why isn't Easter called "Good Sunday"??.....

Now, THAT was a very, very "Good Sunday," if ya ask me!!

In fact, it was a supercalifragilisticexpialidocious Sunday!!

"Up from the grave He arose!!
With a mighty triumph o'er his foes!!
He arose a victor from the dark domain!!
And he lives forever, with his saints to reign!!
He arose! He arose! Hallelujah! Christ arose!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

My reading over the years seems to indicate that there are no certainties why Easter Friday is called Good Friday. These are a couple of suggestions I have read:

  1. The church in Gaul, what is France and Germany today, used the name Gute Freitag (German) to indicate "good" or "holy" Friday.
  2. Another possibility is that Easter Friday was called "God's Friday", but some people sometimes found it offensive to speak the word, "God", so they changed it to "Good Friday".
These are but suggestions for its origin.
