Why do Some Christians Get a Kick Out of Hating Gays?

I'm not giving out any names, but many people around me whom I love dearly are often "hostile" towards gays. Their name-calling, threats, and etc, always makes me feel really distressed and uncomfortable (even though I'm not gay). I just don't like it and it is one of the reasons why I stopped believing.

Is this what Christians are supposed to do. Likewise, is it wrong for Christians to hold other Christians accountable for these remarks/threats, etc?

This is what very basic, shallow Christians do (threaten, call names)... They're like infants.

...Try mingling with more advanced, spiritually grown-up Christians, instead.

It is like saying,
"These other people better get their act together, or I will refuse to stay Saved...!"
That is a maturity issue on your part.

@Jaedan, it could be you're more advanced for your age. But you have to understand that everyone's spiritual mileage varies. Even the old can be spiritually young, while others who are young could be spiritually mature.

During Great Lent in the Orthodox church, we continually pray for God to help us look at our own sins and not the sins of others. So no, Christians are not supposed to act this way.

I applaud you for your audacity to assume that I don't want to be a Christian because I see other Christians "sin."

I asked a question to see if the stated behavior in the OP was normal for Christian to partake in. If the behavior isn't, it is definitely something I do not want to partake in if I hypothetically became a Christian again.

I'm not one of those people, so I couldn't tell you their exact motivations or psychology. Overweening hostility such as name-calling and threats to a non-hostile person's safety is at best immature, and always inexcusable. What Christians are to do is to love people, even if we disagree with those people, even if those people are engaging in sin. For some, this message needs more hammering home than others.

Also, this is not a good reason to stop believing. Whether or not Christians act badly has no bearing on whether or not God exists, created the world, sent Jesus, or raised him up on the third day.

Name-calling and threats toward gay people are not appropriate actions for Christians to engage in. It's mean, it's cruel, it hurts people, and Christians shouldn't be doing it. Even for Christians who believe that same-sex intimacy is a sin, name-calling and threats are not how we should be treating other beloved children of God.

When people dislike a certain group for their ideology or practices they will typically make fun of them within the confines of certain social settings. This universal and not limited to Christians. I'm willing to bet Gays make fun and mock Christians within certain social settings as well.

If you're going to condemn Christians especially for this, you need to condemn all humanity for it because everyone is guilty of disparaging people behind their backs. It's the sin of Gossip.

I think your own walk with Jesus is your number one responsibility.

As you yield your life to His Love and Wisdom, these matters will sort out.

Don't let anything get in the way of your relationship with Him.

Get into a loving fellowship and grow your faith.

On judgement day we wont be able to say what others did - it will be all about what you did.

1) It's not normal in my church.
2) Given what you said here and in post #6, it sounds like it is. Harassing and threatening people is sinful. Nobody gets a pass for that from God if their target is gay.

Hello Jaedan, the Bible is pretty specific about the fact that the use of course language (in almost all situations) is sinful .. e.g. Ephesians 4:29, 5:4; Colossians 3:8 cf Matthew 12:34-37. It also speaks of our great need to love our neighbor (Christian and non-Christian alike), and to always treat others in the same manner that would want/hope to be treated by them (even if we have been treated badly by them in the past and/or are being treated badly by them in the moment ).

Matthew 7
12 However you want people to treat you, so treat them, for this is the Law and the Prophets.

Matthew 19
19b You shall love your neighbor as yourself.​

Of course it isn't normal. What would give you the impression of it being normal? A few ole bigots you may have encountered? There are simply people like that who exist regardless of faith or no faith.
