  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

Why do so many people have a problem with Mark Discoll?

Hi guys

So, Im a massive fan of Driscoll and what he does and how he does it, it seems to be a really good fit for me and makes things quite accessable. However, I have noticed that more than a few people on this website really seem to dislike the man. Is it possible to know why?

The reason I am asking here, rather than googling it, is because all I am finding are ranting blogs which seem to have been written by nutters. Can someone please explain clearly what the issues around this guy are?

Thanks

He seems really haughty, judgemental, angry, self-righteous and so on. Some of his views may seem a bit off to many as well. Wont go into it her, but some of the things he has said didnt seem to align with how a lot of christians see things.

^^This. I like Mark Driscoll very much but he's not my go-to. But I'll take Mark Driscoll's sermons any day over that Todd Friel from Way of the Master.

I believe that Mark has a very no-nonsense approach and I generally agree with what he preaches (some of his sermons cut straight to my heart when I was first searching and were instrumental in my repentance and commitment to Christ) and I respect him for that. There are a few subjects which I disagree with him on, but you can't please all the people all the time. I know a lot of people dislike him and I don't really understand it either. I find him to be a very real, honest pastor. I don't find him judgmental, just unapologetic.

Just to add to what you typed here.. It may not align with the majority.. But the vast majority of the christians i see in the world today are the same ones that are telling me that there is a time and place for evangelizing and now is always not the place.. What i am saying is. Maybe its because he preaches the truth that he is revered.. Kinda like Christ and the apostles were.. Ive listened to the driscolls the father mother son team. They give life applications to scripture.. I think they are awesome.. So let me ask this. Just to get an idea if you people complaining are even scriptural.. What do you think of charles stanly or john mcarthur or my fav rc sproll.. these men are completely scriptural. i wanna add that this message wasnt aimed at the poster that i posted on top of.. I just started there and then went for the general audience that reads these posts..

^^That. There is also something of personality cult at Mars Hill. Not to mention the misogyny in his teachings, and he can be pretty irreverent. His perception of what it means to be a man is extremely narrow-minded. Oh, and it is clear he has significant issues with sexuality, and I think it might behoove him to handle those problems before making it a central focus of his teaching.

I am always puzzled by Mega-Chruches.

Just the fact that Jesus had 5000 followers at a time, but did not ask the poor for donations so he could "pimp" out a stadium or spend tons of money on fancy decorations.

Also his salary of $250,000 a year...

Everyday I think why I don't I become a super rich pastor myself. Everyone would adore me, and people that make way less than me would give me tons of money, and people would think I deserve it.

I know that a lot of mega churches are mainly about materialism but I've watched a LOT of Driscoll's sermons right before I became a committed Christian and I really don't get a materialistic type of vibe from him. I definitely do not agree with everything he preaches, BUT, from what I've seen, he does seem sincere and to be focused on being a godly teacher.

There are quite a few imams, rabbis and shinto priests who would also qualify as "sincere" and "focused on being a godly teacher". Those are hardly adequate qualifications.

Then what are "adequate qualifications" in your view?

For one thing, Driscoll claims to have heard the audible voice of God commanding him to begin his ministry. By this many claim he has real apostolic authority. This always sets people off. Sun Myung Moon also claimed to have met Jesus, it almost seems as if this kind of things is more a quality of false prophets these days. So that is one issue.

Driscol is very simple and very pragmatic, he's a very good speaker and he teaches a very straightforward Gospel that resonates with many people. But he waters down a lot of church theologies.

The worse accusations seem to be that he leaves room for the possibility that Jesus was tempted but also lusted and sinned.

False Teachers Exposed: MARK DRISCOLL SAYS THAT JESUS LUSTED AFTER WOMEN

He endorses the model of spiritual warfare in which we "claim" territorry and converse with demons - a doctrine not found in scripture.

Sola Sisters: Mark Driscoll speaking to demons: "I want to know who all is involved here and what we're dealing with."

Google "Driscoll false teacher" and you will find many accusations......

In my personal view:

He boils things down to such simplicity that it is very easy to see why people gravitate to him. He is very outspoken on issues like the rapture, mocking those that believe in it. He doesn't believe in the antichrist or the literal interpretation of anything in Revelation.

But I think most of all what bothers people is that he puts all sin on the level and refuses to really address the issues of the day head on. Homesexuality is a good example. While it is true all unrepantant sinners will get the same punishment, and all Saints will get eternal life regardless of their sin, the Bible has some stark things to say about homesexuality. Driscoll though, makes all lust and all other sin on the level with homoesexuality. "sin is sin" as they say.....

But this doesn't account for how to address the progressive homesexual agenda, and the sexuality of Christians or the fitting behavior of the church. Homesexuals have this identity issue that they are pushing for, it isn't just about marriage (Driscoll obviously supports traditional marriage). They want to have Jesus, and be accepted, and keep their homosexual identity. Driscols views help them do that because if I get mad, and yell at my kids, and that sin is the same level as homesexuality... well, we're all pretty screwed. Homesexuality is a lifestyle, its this whole ball of wax. He sort of avoids the whole thing. He does draw fire from the secular world too though.

I just look at the income. I could never go to a church when I knew the pastor is making $250,000 a year. Even churches in my area where I see the pastor driving BMWs or purchasing a $2000 suit...if that isn't materialism, then I dont know what is.
