Hi guys
So, Im a massive fan of Driscoll and what he does and how he does it, it seems to be a really good fit for me and makes things quite accessable. However, I have noticed that more than a few people on this website really seem to dislike the man. Is it possible to know why?
The reason I am asking here, rather than googling it, is because all I am finding are ranting blogs which seem to have been written by nutters. Can someone please explain clearly what the issues around this guy are?
Thanks
For one thing, Driscoll claims to have heard the audible voice of God commanding him to begin his ministry. By this many claim he has real apostolic authority. This always sets people off. Sun Myung Moon also claimed to have met Jesus, it almost seems as if this kind of things is more a quality of false prophets these days. So that is one issue.
Driscol is very simple and very pragmatic, he's a very good speaker and he teaches a very straightforward Gospel that resonates with many people. But he waters down a lot of church theologies.
The worse accusations seem to be that he leaves room for the possibility that Jesus was tempted but also lusted and sinned.
False Teachers Exposed: MARK DRISCOLL SAYS THAT JESUS LUSTED AFTER WOMEN
He endorses the model of spiritual warfare in which we "claim" territorry and converse with demons - a doctrine not found in scripture.
Sola Sisters: Mark Driscoll speaking to demons: "I want to know who all is involved here and what we're dealing with."
Google "Driscoll false teacher" and you will find many accusations......
In my personal view:
He boils things down to such simplicity that it is very easy to see why people gravitate to him. He is very outspoken on issues like the rapture, mocking those that believe in it. He doesn't believe in the antichrist or the literal interpretation of anything in Revelation.
But I think most of all what bothers people is that he puts all sin on the level and refuses to really address the issues of the day head on. Homesexuality is a good example. While it is true all unrepantant sinners will get the same punishment, and all Saints will get eternal life regardless of their sin, the Bible has some stark things to say about homesexuality. Driscoll though, makes all lust and all other sin on the level with homoesexuality. "sin is sin" as they say.....
But this doesn't account for how to address the progressive homesexual agenda, and the sexuality of Christians or the fitting behavior of the church. Homesexuals have this identity issue that they are pushing for, it isn't just about marriage (Driscoll obviously supports traditional marriage). They want to have Jesus, and be accepted, and keep their homosexual identity. Driscols views help them do that because if I get mad, and yell at my kids, and that sin is the same level as homesexuality... well, we're all pretty screwed. Homesexuality is a lifestyle, its this whole ball of wax. He sort of avoids the whole thing. He does draw fire from the secular world too though.
