Simple answer...religion is big business and many do it for this reason only. Been going on since before Jesus.

Why do we assume that to be a Christian means wearing clothes from the Goodwill and driving a rust bucket with 200,000 miles is a sign of holiness?

If you are single, no kids, and make a good salary...or if you oversee several local churches and have to drive 40-50k a year, is not a vehicle a good investment

This is "poor thinking" from people who do not tithe, whining about giving money to the church and the preacher buys a rolex with it...."talk'n trash"....muzzle not the ox that treads out the grain, the minister is due a double portion, the man who speaks of eternity, might deserve same as doctor / dentist / lawyer....his words will send you to heaven or helll...

There is a mentality around that the poor of the world are somehow the responsibilty of any Christian who isnt poor. How about pop stars, many of whom give loads of money and time to charity anyway? Yeyt I dont hear people suggest they should give everything away.

I wonder where that mentalty came from. Oh...that's right. Jesus!

Pop stars = Ministers?? That my friend is exactly the problem, it's just a shame that money and the luxuries of the world continue to blind so many.

Tithes?? No thanks...I think I'll give those blessings to those who are actually in need. At least I know it will be from my heart and not out of the attempted guilt trip laid by some greedy "religious" leader, manipulating the Word of God for their own selfish gain.

All things are available to me but not all things are good for me. So, drive what you like. Ignore the poor if you like. Just don't be surprised when the works you present before the Lord all burn up. You have your reward.

It's really heartbreaking that after 2000 years, we've come no further than the Pharisees of that day. Lord Jesus....please hurry up and get here. I'm so tired of this world.

I watched it the other day and found it to be very interesting, taking into consideration that the guy who has agreed to do it is a believer himself. It doesn't attempt falsify the existence of god or any of that, it's showing that some "pastors" aren't as truthful as they appear to be. Like what was said in the bible that the enemy will send people who will show you false miracles that claim to be of god but are not, i think this is what we are being shown in the show. Thats not to say that the people at the end in the hall were not truly healed, as the worship and the strong presence of god in their hearts would still be true, only the "show man" was the deciever. But then again, that could be what the bible was referring to also. Either way it just gives non believers another excuse.

Well, in America, it seems to be either Caddies or Lexuses.....

That's interesting. I know a lot of pastors of several denominations (I attend a non-denom Baptist-leaning church, my wife is a UMC PK, I am a UMC PK, my parents' closest friends were mostly UMC pastors and a few from other denoms, etc.). I have not yet met a pastor who drives a Caddie or Lexus.

Of the pastors I know right now: 1 drives a Ford Explorer and has a beat up Subaru for his kid, 1 drives a Toyota Highander, 1 drives a Chrysler minivan, my dad had an F150 until he died in 2008. My step mother has several pastor friends as well, and I have never seen any of her friends in a car of that caliber.

And, it's worth noting that most of the pastors I have known are also exceptionally shrewd with their money. The reason that they can afford such luxuries as Fords, Toyotas, and Chryslers is that they have lived frugally, given generously, made wise financial choices, and have been doing so for multiple decades.

In theory, every car is a luxury in comparison to most of the world. Your-Best-Life-Now-ism is certainly a problem, it's theological cancer.

I don't think we are in error for having a shelter over our heads, being able to feed our families, having transportation and the like (our clergy included). Even having a nice car, I don't think, is terribly problematic. But there are serious ethical considerations that we do need to have, and instead of me boring you all to death with my words, this story from Tony Campolo is one of my favorites and he says it all pretty well:

This is a difficult post to write.......

......for several reasons.......

1. I do not wish to come across sounding like I am condemning anyone for wanting to own and drive an expensive car......

2. I do not want to sound like I am specifically criticizing or putting down ministers or priests for wanting to own and drive an expensive car......

3. I do not want to sound like I am inferring that ALL ministers and priests own and drive expensive cars.....

4. I want to present the subject of why so many ministers and priests own and drive expensive cars in the most neutral and inoffensive way possible......

5. I simply wish to make an obsevation that, in my personal experience, it seems like the majority of ministers and priests own and drive expensive cars.....

6. I realize that not all ministers and priests own and drive expensive cars and, in fact, many own and drive cars that are only being held together by the body paint.....

Okay.....having gotten that out of the way......

What does wealth have to do with being humble. I know plenty of people who are extremely poor and they're some of the most disgusting people imaginable. They smoke crack and rob people for money, but the cross they wear around their neck makes it okay?

Meanwhile I know plenty of people who have millions and millions, and are always there to help those out in need, are genuinely good people, and are incredibly selfless.

To say that the amount of money anyone has is in anyway indicative of the manner in which they live their life is very, very false.

I would have to disagree, the manor in which everyone lives their live is completely indicative of how much money they have, certianly there is a few exceptions to any statement, as I myself have known very humble and kind crack addicts who didn't steal and rob people of money. And rich people who lived like paupers, and hermits and never helped a soul with anything

I knew one pastor who did a lot of building and he drove an expensive car because he thought the car caused the people he worked with to have more confidence in him. Perhaps they would trust him that he was going to pay his bills.
