Reasons why death is a good thing:

-Stops over population.
-Provides food one way or the other (either the body breaks down in the earth, bringing nutrients to the stuff growing in it, or the option that's so fun to bring up at dinner parties: cannibalism)
-When we die, either one of two things is going to happen. We either go on in some different form (which means we can strive to do better, as always), or we die into an eternal slumber (and hey, a good night's sleep is good, imagine an good eternity's sleep).
-We stop suffering: getting old pretty much is going to result in all sorts of aches and pain.

I'm not advocating we all die just right now: by all means, continue to party here while we can.

If you are a theist when you die you go to some form of eternity. If you are an atheist you are done. What does it matter? In either case it is not something to be feared.

that's how it works?

I better make my own religion so I can go to a place where my desires are met. :)

What I said was a skewed and broken part of what some Greek said. But I suppose the part to add is that if the theist is right, as they believe, then he is going to the good place, and thus has nothing to worry about. If the athiest is right, as they believe, then they have nothing to worry about either for they aren't going anywhere. So no one should fear death.

why do good things happen to bad people.

Dumb luck, sometimes good people support bad people, not uncommonly bad people to bad stuff to get what they want.

That and Chuck Norris has yet to destroy them.

And Mr. T has yet to pity them.

It is a good question though, because as one poster mentioned, that muscles and the body break down from wear and tear and that is why we die, IS INCORRECT!

Scientists are still trying to figure out why the body ages, it is built into our programming. It is not merely wear and tear. When you work out, you tear muscle, the body rebuilds it and even adds a tiny bit, so you get stronger, not weaker. By your definition mr t_w, if you never worked out or moved a muscle you would look tremendously young at an old age compared to an active person, of course you'd still die at roughly the same time because your organs would have to be working all the time, but you would die young and healthy looking, stronger than someone who was active. We know this is not true.

So why do we die? Obviously it has been programmed into our system, I wonder by who (insert shiftyeyes here)

We certainly 'die', by any standard definition of the word...e.g. cease of activity in both the heart and brain, so i don't know what the last poster was getting at. The reason we die is that we are durable - muscles cave in after being used x amount of times (and our heart is a muscle).
We are eternal beings housed in a physical body. The body may die (heart, brain, etc.), but there is another part of us that lives on, eternally.
That's why it matters what one's relation to Jesus is.
It determines our eternal living conditions.
