Why do people fear/hate Ellen White?

It seems that the critique of Ellen White goes far beyond just disagreement, it goes to the realm of making her look as a extremist or mentally unhinged writer. Anyone that reads her writtings knows that is not the case, yet it seems that many hate and fear what is in her writtings.

The same reason people hate the bible: because it shows how wicked they are!
talk about a cultish statement. I like the bible, still like the bible and used to like EGW and don't any more.

They hate her because her message cuts to the heart.

Just take a look at what they did to Stephen when he confronted the people that killed him with such cutting words.

Then they cried out with a loud voice, and stopped their ears, and ran upon him with one accord,
(Act 7:57)

I find that most Traditionals hate the fact that she suggests that the length of time for which a belief is held does not make it truth and that we should never shy away from continued scrutiny.
a progressive utterance if I ever read one...

Testimonies Volume 1 Page 328:
"Some, I was shown, could receive the published visions, judging of the tree by its fruits. Others are like doubting Thomas; they cannot believe the published Testimonies, nor receive evidence through the testimony of others; but must see and have the evidence for themselves. Such must not be set aside, but long patience and brotherly love should be exercised toward them until they find their position and become established for or against. If they fight against the visions, of which they have no knowledge; if they carry their opposition so far as to oppose that in which they have had no experience, and feel annoyed when those who believe that the visions are of God speak of them in meeting, and comfort themselves with the instruction given through vision, the church may know that they are not right. God's people should not cringe and yield, and give up their liberty to such disaffected ones. God has placed the gifts in the church that the church may be benefited by them; and when professed believers in the truth oppose these gifts, and fight against the visions, souls are in danger through their influence, and it is time then to labor with them, that the weak may not be led astray by their influence."

One of our elders shortened it: the reason most SDA's don't read EGW is because she will pointedly point out their sins and they don't want to hear it.

Did you see the study that says that those Adventists who read EGW the most are more likely to spend more time reading the Bible? The inverse seems to be true as well. It is easier to make a snide remark in passing as if it was the truth.

However that does not mean EGW is to be used as a mesauring rod to test someone's spirituality or commitment to Adventism. There is enough spiritual bullying going on in our churches as it is. When her writings are used in context there are a good source however some Adventists treat her like the Adventist Pope.

No, it was your remark that was snide--that's why you labeled me.
I don't go by Shepherd's Rod. Try orthodox SDA.

Good points--although in 40 years as an SDA I have yet to meet any of the latter type--perhaps they know what would happen next if they spouted off?

Perhaps these people who claim to love EGW so much are the same people who don't read her?

But don't you quote Sister White. I don't want you ever to quote Sister White until you get your vantage ground where you know where you are. Quote the Bible. Talk the Bible. It is full of meat, full of fatness. Carry it right out in your life, and you will know more Bible than you know now. You will have fresh matter - O, you will have precious matter; you won't be going over and over the same ground, and you will see a world saved. You will see souls for whom Christ has died. And I ask you to put on the armor, every piece of it, and be sure that your feet are shod with the preparation of the gospel. {SpM 174.1}
