  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

keep themselves so well hidden? what are they afraid of?

They're shy.

My belief is they don't bother you if you're not sincerely interested. (Actually, they don't bother some people who do seem interested).

They are sleeping and waiting for the time when the stars are right.

God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit are highly visible in the lives of countless millions every day. The same has been true for thousands of years.

Those who reject God have zero impact on the absolute reality of God. Psalms 14 comes to mind for those who say there is no God. In the end, all will stand before a Holy and Righteous Judge - Jesus Christ - at the Great White Throne Judgment. Any doubts will be gone, but it will be too late for those who have rejected Him. All that will be left is to hear their sentence.

For about two thousand years, you mean? Before then the concept of the Trinity was unknown.

I imagine that if there existed deities that were especially interested in having humans believe in them, then we'd believe in them. It wouldn't really be a matter of belief so much as knowledge, as they could just come and talk. It shouldn't be difficult.

So if deities are hidden, one might assume either there are no deities, or they are not interested in making their selves known to humans for any number of reasons. I wouldn't really blame them, as they'd probably have better ways to spend their time.

a)Being loved to death, presumably. We would literally worship them out of existence.

b)G*d gave us a choice, and if we know he exists then there IS no choice, because I mean... He's like, right over there and we KNOW that we best love Him because the alternative becomes pretty obvious once He tells you. You know, to your face.

c) I thought the voice of G*d was too powerful for any man after Moses to hear, but I haven't read my O.T. in a while, and that doesn't really explain why the angels haven't been around in a while telling us to straighten up and fly right.

I'm going with a), because fatal quantities of love still sound like a good thing to me, but I, too, am kind of scared of that idea.

I could see a potential God wanting to hide from humanity. Maybe this God would take a non-interference stance with our lives. Maybe this God was uninterested in humanity or too busy with other things. There are tons of reasons why a potential God would want to hide.

What I have trouble seeing is a God that hides from humanity and makes belief in his existence a requirement for salvation.

God is not a single isolated entity. It is not "hidden". Every time a rose blooms it is glorifying it's creator. Your ability to be an atheist is because of your theistic origins. The mind seems to be conditioned by statues and the like. Together with the state of man in the material, equating "God" to yourself.

Every time a rose blooms and a child dies it is glorifying it's creator, or don't you see it like that? I suspect that the child dying has conveniently been labled the devils work.

Yet the pattern in nature seems to suggest that complex things come from increasingly simpler things, which does not scream that this is God's handiwork. We aren't all labeled with tags that say "Made by God" either. Seeing a rose bloom and calling it evidence for God only works if you already accept God's existence. Sounds like circular reasoning to me. It is also a huge cop out (trust me, I know about cop outs because I just saw the series finale of Lost). The evidence for God is obvious if you assume that God is real. We don't all make that assumption.

A rose blooming is more of an emotional appeal than actual evidence. It sounds romantic which is probably why it feels like your answer is the answer. That may not necessarily be the case.

Your ability to be an atheist is because of your theistic origins. The mind seems to be conditioned by statues and the like. Together with the state of man in the material, equating "God" to yourself.

Let me make sure I am understanding you correctly. Are you saying atheists think of themselves as gods?
