Why do Atheists stand alone?
and religious people band together in groups?

Any theories?
Well many people are afraid to admit their atheist and atheist are only a short group of people so they are kind of spread out over the world. Atheist have no cultural background so they really don't tend to fit in anywhere. IMO I think we as humans should stick together rather than our beliefs.

Actually, in terms of numbers, Atheists are the third or fourth (depending on where you split agnostics and non-religious theists and such) largest "religion" after Christianity, Islam, and Hinduism. There are hundreds of millions of us. Hardly a "short" group.

I would think I was a pretty autonomous guy... Dependent on God though, always.

I once had a sweet young thing trying to sell me a cell phone contract say "your minutes are unlimited up to 1000."

Don't people read the dictionary anymore?

For the same reason that disbelievers in Santa Claus stand alone. Atheists as a group do not adhere to a set of dogmas like religious groups. The only thing that all atheists have in common is a common disbelief. For christians there is a common set of dogmas which are spelled out in the Nicene Creed.

and religious people band together in groups?

At least for christians, because the New Testament suggests that they should.

Indeed. My pet peeve is the misuse of the word "literally". I always give someone a strange look when they say that their kids "literally make my head explode". Really? Doesn't that usually result in death?

Because atheism is not a religion, or a grouping of individuals. It is simply a lack of specific belief in a deity or deities. 'Atheist' as a category includes a wide variety of people, from Buddhists and agnostics to humanists and to those who have no formal religion or philosophy.

It isn't really possible to form a group based on a lack of belief in a specific thing. Christians and other religious and non-religious groups form around a specific set of positive beliefs.

Well said. Nothing in the statement "I don't believe in god" forces a person to hold any moral, political, or philisophical code. It doesn't even require naturalism. There are religions in the world that are inherently atheistic, like certain forms of Buddhism, that still hold to the idea of spirits and an afterlife, just one deviod of a creative intellegence.

I think that the diffusion of atheists and the disagreements that we hold on certain issues are some of our better qualities.

Yes, I agree, we are human beings first and foremost.

Because the only thing common among atheists, is the lack of belief in god(s). On the other hand, most religious people not only believe in god(s), but also share in articles of faith, creeds, doctrine, and all sing from the same song book, accordingly.

The OP is correct, atheists do tend to stand alone. Ever wonder how many Christians are Christian simply to belong? I personally went from atheism to a form of Deism in my philosophical ramblings, it was a short step to Christianity because I want that community for my family, and what does it matter if I take the bible literally or not?

So your actions are not based on neither faith nor evidence, but peer-pressure?

Yikes!

I'm not subject to peer pressure, believe me. Nobody forced me to join any group, I simply wanted to. This life is short. What difference does it make to the world if I'm a staunch pandeist? Or if I'm a Catholic? Will the world be better off if I'm one or the other? The world won't be changed by me. But I'd like a circle of friends. And believe me, those who are together because of religion do not spend their time talking about religion. We spend our time talking about our kids, talking about our joys and trials, talking about sports or soap opera's, whatever. And our kids get to join in that community of good people. It helps them, strengthens them. It isn't a bad thing.
