  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Why do atheists get married?

I have wondered this for some time now; and I'm just asking out of curiosity.

And for the record ... no offense ... if you answer, and your icon is anything other than ATHEIST, I will not accept your answer.

I want an expert opinion here.

[I get tired of agnostics acting like they're atheists.]

Wrong forum, ja

Why? did all the atheists go to the Anabaptist forums or something?

Where else can one find the biggest concentration of atheists but here?

Well, here in Austria a civil marriage is needed for some legal purposes in a household where there is living a couple. (Can't really explain it in English, sorry.)
Hopefully you get it anyway.

I think an Atheist couple wouldn't marry in a church.
Another thing is an Atheist marrying a Christian. Then it's often the wish of the Christian, who wants to marry, as, especially for women, a marriage in a Church is the most beautiful day in her life.
Btw, here in Austria (and Germany as well), less and less Christians (but mostly they're Christians by name only) are marrying in Church.

I wish America was that way!

In America this isn't the case?

I mean, you also can live without a civil marriage as a couple in Austria (and some do), but there are none of the advantages of a civil marriage then.

I got it ... you did good!
I'm relieved. ;) Thanks.

To be honest, I don't really know.

Back in my younger days, it was called "shacking up," and I don't think they had any kind of benefits at all.

If a man and woman lived together for 7 years, they would then be considered "married" in a legal sense (that was called a "common law marriage").

I think today though, the concept of the "common law marriage" has quietly gone away.

However you look at it, we Christians [should] call it "living in sin".

They were considered civil-married after they've lived together for 7 years? Sounds weird. Why that?

Yes, we Christians should consider it that way.

The sad thing is, my sister is living together with her friend without being married.
As well as my Cousin did, until recently... :(

I'm not sure.

If a woman moved in with a man, and she received her mail at his address for 7 years, and they shared expenses, debts and otherwise acted like a married couple, then the two were considered legally married.

In fact, back in my younger days, the woman took on the man's first name.

For example, if Jane Doe married John Smith, she was considered Mrs. John Smith.
