  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Why did they invent algebra?

I have to learn this in order to get my degree. I am doing the problems, and I am passing. But I still don't get what the point is. It's a little hard. But I get a lot of help. But I am trying to figure out what the point is.

From my own experience, one gets insight by just doing problem after problem. Also, don't do the minimum but do much more than the minimum.

Thank you

That is wise advice.

algebra teaches you many things, but the number one thing it teaches is process for programming.

for a=1 to 2

if a=1 then print a

Algebra is a set of commands for a set of numbered groups or arrays , so we use it to set a number for things in real life.

Because we use algebra daily.

I have $20 in my wallet. I need to buy lunch supplies. My frozen dinner is $3.00. A six pack of soda is on sale for $4.00. A bunch of bananas is $1.11. I pass by an incredible sale on your favorite breakfast cereal at $1.50 a box. How many boxes of cereal can I buy after I purchase my lunch items?

(Dinner+soda+bananas) + X boxes of cereal = $20

The other reason is that the purpose of a college degree is to produce a well-rounded person which includes basic understanding of advanced math. If you don't need algebra for your major then there are probably other math classes that you could have taken.

Just do what I did....

Ask your professor like I did:
"Toro has an algebra question

X-4 + 42m over X6 - m95

What did he come up with if he gets the correct answer?"

Of course, my professor wasnt amused... but, in all fairness I HAVE spent so many years of solving Sally's problem when she had 3 apples but someone took 2 from her yet she was so lazy I had to tell her how many she had left.

Otr the amount of times I had to solve the problem for John when he wanted to catch a train and needed to know when he would arrive.

Etc.....

Enough!! Its time someone solved MY math problems....

Asking someone else to solve your problems IS mathematically accurate... just ask Sally, when she needed her apples counted... or John and his itinerary....:puff:

Learning proportions in algebra helped me to set goals for how much fat to lose and how much muscle to build.
Learning the order of operations has helped me understand the syntax for writing scripts on the computer, which in turn makes me more productive at work. It has also helped me with budgeting, I use a spreadsheet for that.

Algebra was probably invented for some important reason, but all I see is some joker trying to fit the alphabet into the numerical system. I think it helps encourage logical deduction and thinking, but I'm an artistic type, so all I see is a math-based torture system meant to brainwash you into believing their false religion of math. Math is a cult! They say "x" equals 12? How? Because the numbers add up? Why? There's no explanation, they just do. You have to have blind faith in the math textbook. That's a cult if I ever saw one!
As a Christian, I cannot support false religions like math.

... (This is said in humor, for those two or three reading this who somehow takes me seriously. You know who you are.)

When I was learning algebra my teacher always said that "Maths is a test of character". So I guess that using algebra to solve mathematical, scientific, and engineering problems was always just considered a relatively minor potential application, while the main project consisted of developing algebra as a test for strength of character.

Algebra is just plain nasty for someone with a maths dyslexia. I have NOTHING when it comes to crunching numbers, working out square roots, dividing, subtracting or multiplying.

Algebra, I can't even budge with it. I retook my maths GCSE at 21 and still only received a D grade.
