Who know why they do anything they do...
Speculations and "theories" can range from superficial to conspiratorial.
On the superficial side. RT media was blocked by a number of countries and had their broadcast licenses yanked from several countries as well. Like any media outlet, viewership = money. Perhaps it was just a publicity stunt to keep their name out in the forefront of public discourse?
A middle-ground theory. Perhaps certain employees of the "state controlled media outlet" aren't quite as "state controlled" after all, and maybe this was an attempt to create headaches for Putin with plausible deniability? This particular TV presenter, Olga Skabeyeva, has been the target of speculation before with regards to being critical of Putin (there was the scandal involving her Telegram posts calling him a schizo and mocking him)
On the more "nefarious side", if there is, indeed, any "buddy buddy" relationship between Trump and Putin as many speculate, pretending to have a "public spat" is something that could be leveraged as a defense against those allegations later on.
So, for instance, if in 7 months from now, Trump implements a policy that's perceived to be "anti-Ukraine/pro-Russia", a defense could be "It has nothing to do with me liking Russia, I hate that guy, he showed pics of my wife"
Or, it's just a way for Putin to project to his own people that he's somehow "above Trump" or "not afraid of Trump" should he have to end up making more concessions to Ukraine than originally hoped for.
But again, these are all just random theories I'm pulling out of thin air lol...nobody knows what goes on behind the curtain over there
