  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Why Church?

In a society where we often see a church on every other street corner, it becomes easy to forget the reason our churches are even there.

What do you think or feel whenever you pass a church? Reverence? Indifference? Antagonism? What is the first think you recognize? The architecture? Denomination? Nothing?

What does church really mean to you? What is it even there for?

The first thing I usually notice about a church that I pass is the signs they put on up. My children and I pass a couple with some very uplifting messages as well as some that are cute or funny. I think one of my favorites was...If Jesus is in your heart, notify your face.
Church is very important to me as a place to fellowship. To learn more about my Lord, to share the blessings of others as well as prayer for those who need it. It is a place I love to go to share and worship my Saviour with other believers.

What a great question.
It is making me think. I don't think I notice the Churches much where I live, except, maybe a little curiosity if I see one I hadn't noticed before.
I spent a little over 3 years in Spokane, WA and I certainly noticed the Churches there. There are soooo many and many of them are so old. And they are so beautiful. I was in awe of the beauty of some of them.
But it wasn't just what they looked like but they seem to have the Spirit of Love oozing out of them.

Amazing feeling.

I often wonder if the word of God is so powerful and you're doing such a great job of spreading that word, WHY do you have to put up so much advertising?

As for other thoughts and feelings, folk can meander over to the Unchurched forums for other thoughts and feelings I have on this matter.

Interesting topic.

I am often amazed. Here in South Africa we have many poor communities. As you drive thru them it is incredible how big and ornate the churches are.

That is sickening to me.

In our more affluent towns, the more affluent the church buildings get.

It is also upsets me that most of these buildings stand empty for 6 days a week.

It reminds me of the Temple and how much importance was placed on it and all in vain because there is nothing in a building that can help you!

I wonder how we will answer one day for all the money spent on building such useless structures whilst people around us die of starvation, not just for food but also for the Word of God?

I am sorry, but I do not agree with a church building of any sort. We should be meeting in other places.

I think that's a great question. But, realistically, it isn't so much the church that is to blame, but Christians in general. Especially where I live, Christianity is often seen as hypocritical and shallow...and I believe that there are many Christians to blame for this (perhaps even myself). The church I attend goes to great lengths to get the word out about what series are going on, when services are, and how you can get involved. There's a lot of advertising because we want people who maybe have no avenue or invitation to explore Jesus to feel welcome and to let the community know what's going on. I wish our love would do all the talking.

Thanks for the responses, everyone!

That was a fantastic sign ShadowCat. Thank you for posting that one. It is very true.

I agree with the short but excellent reply of JPPT1974 and Walkmeonthewater. :amen:

In a society where we often see a church on every other street corner, it becomes easy to forget the reason our churches are even there.
In the city that i live, there are so many churches that it is practically difficult or even impossible to visit or be a part of all of them on a regular basis.

What do you think or feel whenever you pass a church? Reverence? Indifference? Antagonism?
The first thing i feel whenever i pass across a Church is "Reverence". Sometimes "Indifference" because of having been a Christian and seen different Churches right from my childhood.

What is the first think you recognize? The architecture? Denomination? Nothing?
The first thing i recognize or wonder at is the "Architecture" of the Church building. The next thing i would be curious to know is the Name of the Church and to which Denomination it belongs to. I would also be curious to know how their regular Sunday Worship Services are conducted. I would also be observing the Interiors of the Church.

What does church really mean to you?
To me the Church has always been a place of Religious or Spiritual Gathering where i could be a small part of ;) and grow in my Faith. It maybe a Fine Architectural Building. It maybe a simple Hall. It maybe class-rooms in a School/College. It maybe a Seminar or Conference Hall in Hotel. It maybe a rented premises or Sheds or Huts. To me it is still a Church where few or more people gather for worship and spiritual edification.

What is it even there for?
In my personal opinion, the Church was, is and would continue to be an important place in the world according to the verse below -

Ephesians 3:21 - Unto him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus throughout all ages, world without end. Amen.

Believers and/or Church-Goers are benefitted by the Prayers, Worship, Preaching, Fellowship and the Social Interaction for mutual benefit, edification, support and cooperation. A place where one can bring their friends/relatives who do not belong to the same Faith and who would be interested in knowing more about the Christian Faith.

We are urged not to forsake the assembling of ourselves for long periods of time according to the verses below -

Hebrews 10:25 - Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another:

The following verses below give us an idea about how the Early Christian Churches were conducted -

Acts 2:42-47 - And they continued stedfastly in the apostles' doctrine and fellowship, and in breaking of bread, and in prayers. And fear came upon every soul: and many wonders and signs were done by the apostles. And all that believed were together, and had all things common; And sold their possessions and goods, and parted them to all men, as every man had need. And they, continuing daily with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, did eat their meat with gladness and singleness of heart, Praising God, and having favour with all the people. And the Lord added to the church daily such as should be saved.

Acts 4:31 - And when they had prayed, the place was shaken where they were assembled together; and they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and they spake the word of God with boldness.

Acts 9:31 - Then had the churches rest throughout all Judaea and Galilee and Samaria, and were edified; and walking in the fear of the Lord, and in the comfort of the Holy Ghost, were multiplied.

Acts 11:26 - And when he had found him, he brought him unto Antioch. And it came to pass, that a whole year they assembled themselves with the church, and taught much people. And the disciples were called Christians first in Antioch.

Acts 15:25 - It seemed good unto us, being assembled with one accord, to send chosen men unto you with our beloved Barnabas and Paul,

Although we may belong to one or more Local Church(s), we also belong to the Universal Church of Christ which comprises of the Believers-In-Christ all over the world.

In this Universal Church of Christ or the Body of Christ, God has placed Apostles, Prophets, Teachers, Miracle-workers, Healers, Helpers, Administrators etc. according to the verse below for the Spiritual Development of the Believers-In-Christ or the Body of Christ.

1 Corinthians 12:27,28 - Now ye are the body of Christ, and members in particular. And God hath set some in the church, first apostles, secondarily prophets, thirdly teachers, after that miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, governments, diversities of tongues.

No Local Church is Perfect. Every Local Church has its own strengths and weaknesses. Every believer-in-Christ need to make his own decision with regard to which Church he would belong to or associate with.

This question has caused me to think. When I pass by a church the first thing I notice is its name, or if they have a sign I read what is on the sign or the sermon topic. Next I wonder what the worhip is like and whether the Pastor is led by the Holy Spirit. I wonder about the people within the congregation, whether they are being fulfilled spiritually through the worship and fellowship with their brothers and sisters in Christ or if they are constantly talking about each other and causing rifts within their church. At the church I was attending recently there was quite a bit of this happening. I wonder if the people are lukewarm toward our Lord and even whether they have ever believed wholly in our Lord's saving grace. So I guess I think about the body within the structure first because in my mind they are truly more important than the building.

Well, I can't speak to South Africa but I do not mind ornate churches. Here in the US they tend to get daily use as both offices for the church staff and a place for people to come and do Bible study, choir practice, etc. They are nice to have on hot and or rainy Sundays as well.

As for the Temple though, that's a pretty bad misunderstanding of it. :) It was the dwelling place of God's own glory for a long time, and certainly served a purpose. Maybe I misunderstand though what you meant.

Take care!

My standard answer to the OP is that church is how we stay grafted into Christ. Believers are to support one another. And there's just the general idea that it is not something to be forsaken.

Heb 10:24-25
24 And let us consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works:
25 Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching.
KJV

If you try to get involved in church, you will sooner or later feel the sting of Satan trying to drive a wedge between you and your brothers and sisters in Christ. I've used this as my excuse not to go to church from time to time, but I think that if you have faced some trouble at church then that is your cue to seek out those who are willing to be supportive friends there, try other churches, do whatever it takes to find Christian support and fellowship, because it is vital.
