I love going to our church's Sunday morning service. I really enjoy the pastor's messages and the music is also wonderful, but for some reason I can't bring myself to sing. Before I was saved I didn't sing either, but that's because I felt I would be a hypocrite to sing God's praises if I wasn't sure I believed in Him. So why can't I sing to Him now? What's stopping me?

I had this problem for a while, but it was more because I felt very self-conscious singing. The choir sits/stands facing the congregation and I felt like they were watching me or something. I had a hard time just concentrating on the music and lyrics, and shutting out everything else around me.

Our church runs a projector on a screen with the lyrics to the words of the songs we are singing. I found that if I concentrate on the screen only, not only can I think more about what it is, exactly, that I'm singing but I can also shut out all the other distractions around me, including my self-consciousness about singing. For a long time I just sang very quietly to myself, almost under my breath in a near whisper, barely moving my lips. After a few services, I felt a lot more comfortable and now I have no problem singing at all - as long as I know the songs. As a new Christian, I still don't know some songs they sing every week, and I don't sing to those until I know them well enough.

Maybe try singing quietly to yourself for a while and see if that helps you become more confident about singing more openly.

Man I know EXACTLY what you mean! I too have this same problem. My dad would always shoot me looks and try and get me to sing in church, but the more he did that the more I just couldn't do it. I guess its partly self conciousness, Im not sure entirely what it is, but I have sorta tried, but when I do its like my throat closes up and I can't hardly make a sound. Usually I just listen to it, but I feel silly not singing and like people are wondering "why isn't she singing?" I wouldn't worry too much about it, I kinda sing along in my head if that makes any sense.

One person here has already quoted it but "

Ps 100:0 A Psalm of praise.

Ps 100:1 Make a joyful noise unto the LORD, all ye lands.

Ps 100:2 Serve the LORD with gladness: come before his presence with singing.

Ps 100:3 Know ye that the LORD he is God: it is he that hath made us, and not we ourselves; we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture.

Ps 100:4 Enter into his gates with thanksgiving, and into his courts with praise: be thankful unto him, and bless his name.

Ps 100:5 For the LORD is good; his mercy is everlasting; and his truth endureth to all generations.

No where in the Bible does it say that we have to sing well for the Lord, It just says to "make a JOYFUL NOISE!!!" I had an old freind that once told me, "If you can't carry a tune in a bucket get something biger to cary it in :) "

But seriously, You are singing to God and Praising Him and Him alone. You are not singing to the peron beside you, or for my case to the congregation. Your only audeince(sp) is THe Lord Our God. He is the only one!! And to Him when you sing His Praises your voice sounds better than any songbird could ever make.

How cares if ou are not on key. or even out of time. Just sing!! God places in our hearts a new song and we are to sing it.

God Bless

God bless you for your honest question. we all know we are not perfect and most of all God knows so well that's why He sent Jesus to us. It seems you don't have confidence in christianity yet. I suggest the keep reading NT thoroughly every day and change your life according to His teaching. When you have confidence with Him you are not going to be so self conscious any more you will enjoy praise and worship songs. I sing horribly but i sing very loud ( people around me always look at me especially the kids) but it doesnt bother me a bit. any way do your best to follow Him and every thing else will follow according to His will. God is not expecting perfection but expecting our wholehearted commitment. This is the bottom line of all christianity.

sincerely, mrs.wilde
