To what end would one diliberately choose to believe in hell?

With the various religions represented on this forum, I would like to know what the different beliefs are. Is it called hell? Is it the same as Christianity's version of hell? What purpose does it serve to hold such beliefs?

I would guess you'd have to have a lot of hate in your heart to want others to burn for eternity for disagreeing with your theology. I don't, so I don't understand those who believe in hell. I think hell exists only in the minds of those who believe in it.

Please forgive me but could you explain that for me? It could really mean alot of different things :)

Ezekeil 18:30
Therefore, every man according to his ways I will judge you, O house of Israel, says the Lord God: repent and cause others to repent of all your transgressions, and it will not be a stumbling block of iniquity for you

God judges us on our actions. Good actions cancel out bad actions....

Ezekiel 14:14
Now should these three men be in its midst-[namely] Noah, Daniel, and Job-they would save themselves with their righteousness, says the Lord God.

Ezekiel 18:24
And if the wicked man repent of all his sins that he has committed and keeps all My laws and executes justice and righteousness, he shall surely live, he shall not die.

and...

Daniel 4:24
Indeed, O king, may my counsel please you, and with charity you will remove your sin and your iniquity by showing mercy to the poor; perhaps your tranquility will last."

Good actions cancel bad actions. When each of us stands before God and judged, I doubt he will administer a theology test and grade us on how well we did. Rather, he will look at how we treated our fellow human beings...

as the Torah commands..

Deutronomy 10:19
You shall love the stranger, for you were strangers in the land of Egypt.

Peace :prayer:

Don't you think that there would have to be hate in your heart to believe that you, yourself could burn in hell?

In the pagan beliefs is there anything like hell? According to a thread in the UT section of the forum, these concepts that are in Christianity are from pagan beliefs that are assimilated from the early pagan converts. Is there any truth to this?

Becuase thats Justice. Each and everyone of us is held accountable for our actions. How can we be rewarded if not tested? I would prefer a world where people beliefs were considered secondary to their actions.

So you do believe in a hell then? Is it here in this life or one of eternal damnation?

In modern-day Pagan beliefs? Not really. The closest some Pagans get is to say that if you believe in hell, you can "give yourself" a Hellish afterlife. I don't even believe that much in hell.

In historical Pagan beliefs? Maybe. I don't hold to things I consider to be immoral, either in the present or the past, so if historical Pagans believed in hell I repudiate said belief.

thank you for your clarity. I have been wrestling as of late with this entire concept of hell. I can not justify a belief in something that gives human weakness and attributes to the divine.

I can really relate to the idea that if you believe in it you will create it for yourself.

If God so deems, that you have commited deeds so terrible ( Genocide, for example ), you will not have the fortune of continueing life in the wolrd to come (Olam HaBa). So yes, Eternal Damnation.

It is of very littel use to believe in hell. It's much more useful TO KNOW weather there is hell or isn't. Obviously, to know that takes more than what our intellect and 5 physical sences can deliver.

Actually, quite franklly, if there's a heaven then one would be led to believe that there's a hell! It just make sense, you can't have one without the other!!

You are stuck forever with hippies and lawyers. Christina Aquillera is always on the radio, and the only movie they ever show is "Titanic".:help:

What you just said does not follow logic. The belief in heaven does not insist on a belief in hell.

The problem I have with most concepts of hell is that it appears to be a an infinite punishment for a finite crime. How can one possibly see that as fair? Yes, I agree that we deserve punishment for our crimes, but what use is that punishment if we don't have the opportunity to learn from it and redeem ourselves later? Whilst I don't believe in a literal hell afterlife, I believe that if such a place exists, it's only a temporary place. Thus, we'd be punished in hell accordingly, but then we'd leave after we'd learnt from it.
