  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

WHY, are you here?

Why ARE you here?

Why are YOU here?

Why are you HERE?

Why are you here?

I'm here because I know the likes of you are here. I learned some time back - and am still in the process of learning - that the religion you preach is not the truth that will set one free. On the contrary, Fundamentalist Christianity is the yoke that Christ came to free us from.

Good straightforward response there KID.

You can't prove your position true, but I admire the directness for sure.

Living in Canada, I had never met a Christian Fundamentalist before, not like what I was always hearing about from the USA, well, mostly since Bush was "elected". I am still in shock at how un-Christlike these people are and how they can twist the Bible.

Equally surprising is the amount of these type of Christians who actually believe that the bible is to be read and understood as literal.

Start listening to what the Liberals and Progressives have mangled it into. It no longer resembles anything the Apostles wrote.

They were first called by this label at Antioch.

If you're asking why I'm at CF, the answer is "for a number of reasons." To learn, to challenge, to understand, are a few.

If you're asking why I exist, it's because my parents wanted kids. I was one result of their efforts.

Fair enough.

And that you didn't take a dig at Christians, you are to be thanked.

Thanks.

Do tell. I've always wanted to know what the rest of the world think is Christlike.

Not surprisingly, it's always the ones who don't take it as literal who are always endorsing sin.

I've heard that a lot, KC. Can you expand on that please? :)

I PM'd him for that very thing.

Scripture is not supportive of the liberalism and progressive camp and I'd like to see an expose on how the fundamentals can be jettisoned.

But that for another thread.

I followed a link to the site from FSTDT and noticed the ethics debate forum when I went to explore.

I initially signed up because I wanted to respond to something. I don't remember what it was; I chickened out and just lurked for a little bit before making my first few posts.

WHY, are you here?

Why ARE you here?

Why are YOU here?

Why are you HERE?

Why are you here?

To engage in the pursuit of truth. To challenge my own ideas and those of others in furtherance of the goal. To be unafraid of where that leads me. And to continue to recognize that when I think I've figured it all out, I'm intellectually dead.

Spoken like a Unitarian.

Yours is a good response.

True, true.

Why are you here?

I've been called a modern day prophet in that I ALWAYS deliver God's word. It infuriates the masses who are always looking for another answer. But oh well.

But mine is to deliver God's truth in love and to teach.:)

I've always been fascinated by belief systems, and quite honestly, most people I know would rather not talk about "God", or spirituality, or ethics, or anything even in the parking lot of religion.

I find it interesting that people have beliefs, and the are often very different from one another. However, sometimes, people say that they have different beliefs (atheism and Christianity, for example), but taking away the labels, I sometimes find them to be more alike than different.

My friend, Christopher, used to say things like "I love to collaborate with actors when I direct, both of us coming up with something better than either of us could do alone. There is something beautiful, special, when two or three people come together, some other element or energy that is there." I looked at him wide eyed, ran to the bible and quoted, "When two or three are gathered in my name, I am there also." I believe that God may literally be the energy we call Love, God literally is love, and what my supposed atheist friend said then is in perfect alignment with the Bible, even though he doesn't read it, or hasn't read much of it at all.

I also like the community, the exchange of ideas. Many people have really fed my head, and I appreciate that. Others have concisely said what I couldn't find words to express, and others have illuminated things that I have learned. It like seeing friends, people who I have something in common with, and when I don't come here, I miss all of you.

I come to challenge my own thinking, to ponder what people say that is in direct opposition with my beliefs, testing it to see if I am not mistaken, and therefore, able to take a step closer to the truth. I question my fairness, as with the OP about wondering if non-Christians unfairly judge Christians, lump them into a stereotype because it's more convenient.

Lately, probably over the last 6 months or so, I sometimes feel compelled to type, compelled to let the Spirit speak, and what comes out seems to not be from the Beanie part of my soul, but the God part, so that even I have to take time to reflect on what was said.

And finally, being gay myself, being lied to by Christians who claimed that God hated gay people, that gays were being punished with AIDS (while lesbians were not), misquoting Scripture in Romans, in the case of S&G, Leviticus, or any of the 5 or so "clobber verses" that are misused, I stand up against it, because the Spirit compells me to, and because some lurker, some young confused gay kid needs to see both sides, needs to challenge what is being said, and really decide for himself. I speak out against lies, injustice, and challenge people to think about what they are saying, and how much of it is false, or truth.

Fundamental Christianity has seemed to lost it's focus. So much seems to be focused on condemning others, fearing "the enemy", which is supposedly gay people, liberals, and anyone outside of their denomination. I am compelled to challenge their direction, to call them to love, to call them to reach out to God and test what I am saying, to see if it is indeed true, and he will answer.

The world doesn't need meaner people, but a call for peace, to live together, to love our neighbor, to care for everyone in the community. Instead, we fight against one another, like a body fighting against other cells and organs, making the body weak and sick. We have to shift our thinking.

And I try to get people to stop thinking so negatively of the other, full of so much condemnation, and humble themselves before God, and therefore, before men, and in so, be lifted up.

Often, I think of how God became flesh, but was not born as a king to be adored, but born in a stable, born in straw. He became a servant for man, to show us what he asks.

I often am told by God that all he wants is for us to love one another. It is so simple that no one will believe that it is all God asks. They complicate everything with dogma and theology, but if one simplifies the message, becomes as a child, it is very clear, and so easy to comprehend.
