In the parable of the wedding feast, the king came in to look at the guests and he saw a man there without wedding clothes who was bound hand and foot and cast into outer darkness where there's weeping and gnashing of teeth. For many are called to the banquet but few are chosen, Mat 22:1-14.

b12.png
Lam 1:14 "My transgressions (and sins) were bound into a yoke; by his hand they were fastened together; they were set upon my neck; he caused my strength to fail; the Lord gave me into the hands of those whom I cannot withstand.

In today's church the most widely accepted interpretation for this parable is the man who was invited to the banquet without wedding clothes that was cast into outer darkness, represents the unbelievers who are not clothed in the righteousness of Christ that will be cast into the darkness hell.

Now at first this definition for many who are called to the banquet but are cast into outer darkness appears to be true.

The called, chosen and faithful saints
However in Revelation 17:14 the scriptures say, They (the Antichrist and his army) will make war on the Lamb, and the Lamb will conquer them, for he is Lord of lords and King of kings, and those with him are called, chosen and faithful (saints).

b14.png

The called saints who return with Jesus in Rev 17:14 is kletos in Greek, and its the identical word that's used in “many are called but few are chosen” to the wedding banquet. The word "kletos" (called) means invited and saint, while chosen means favorite.

Everywhere kletos (called) is used in scripture it refers to the saints of God and not unbelievers.
  • Mat 20:16, 22:14
  • Rom 1:1 Paul, a servant of Christ Jesus, called to be an apostle, set apart for the gospel of God,
  • Rom 1:6 including you who are called to belong to Jesus Christ,
  • Rom 1:7 To all those in Rome who are loved by God and called to be saints: Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
  • Romans 8:28 And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.
  • 1 Cor 1:23-24 but we preach Christ crucified, a stumbling block to Jews and folly to Gentiles, (24) but to those who are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God.
  • 1 Corinthians 1:1, 2
  • Jude 1:1 and
  • Revelation 17:14
Therefore those who are called to the banquet but did not have wedding clothes are not unbelievers, instead they represent the immature saints.

While the few saints who are chosen to the banquet represent Christ's mature bride that's dressed in white wedding garments, which is symbolic for the righteous deeds of the saints, Rev 19:7-8.

Rev 19:7-8 Let us rejoice and exult and give him the glory, for the marriage of the Lamb has come, and his Bride has made herself ready; (8) it was granted her to clothe herself with fine linen, bright and pure"-- for the fine linen is the righteous deeds of the saints.

He has clothed me with garments of salvation,
and covered me with a robe of righteousness
When we become born-again children of God, the Lord clothes us with garments of salvation, Isaiah 61:10.

Then after we have spiritually matured by following Christ through obedient acts of faith and love, we become the chosen and mature bride of Christ, clothed in a white wedding garment that's represented by the righteous deeds of the saints.

Born-again children are heirs of God,
while heirs of Christ represent the saints who suffer with him
In Romans 8:16-17, the Spirit testifies with our spirit that we become born-again children and heirs of God when we believe in Jesus as our Savior by faith.

However to become an heir of Christ as his mature bride, we must first suffer with him as we take up our cross and share his gospel in love, so that we may be glorified with him at the wedding banquet, 2 Timothy 3:12.

  • Romans 8:16-17 The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, (17) and if children, then heirs--heirs of God,
  • and fellow heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with him in order that we may also be glorified with him.
The obedient bride in scripture is represented by the Thessalonian church whose deeds of faith and love for one another were increasing, which is evidence they will be found worthy and chosen to attend the wedding banquet in the kingdom of God for which they are suffering, 2 Thessalonians 1:3-5.

Gal 5:6 For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision (by works of the law) counts for anything, but only faith working through love.

b24.png

The called, chosen and faithful saints who return with Jesus in Rev 17:14, are represented by the children, young men and fathers in 1 John 2:12-14, that's symbolic for the different levels of our spiritual maturity as we grow in Christ.

The word called in scripture that always refers to the saints is a perplexing paradox for today's prophecy teachers to explain, since they believe the “many who are called” to the banquet are unbelievers cast into the darkness of hell, while “the few chosen” represent the church.

The church of Sardis with soiled garments
has a reputation of being alive but they are dead
In Revelation 3:1-6, Jesus rebuked the church of Sardis when he said they have a reputation of being alive but are dead because their deeds were not complete in the sight of my God. (3) Remember, then, what you received and heard. Keep it, and repent. If you will not wake up, I will come like a thief (at the rapture), and you will not know at what hour I will come against you. (4) Yet you have still a few names in Sardis, people who have not soiled their garments, and they will walk with me in white (at the wedding banquet), for they are worthy.

The members of the church of Sardis that were dressed in soiled garments, represent the immature called saints that have failed to grow up in Christ through deeds of faith and love, and they have soiled their clean white garments of Christ's righteousness with their unrepentant sin.

Proverbs 25:26 Like a muddied spring or a polluted fountain (or soiled white garments) is a righteous man who gives way before the wicked.

James 4:17 So whoever knows the right thing to do and fails to do it, for him it is sin.

When Israel was chastised and taken captive in Babylon because of their sinful rebellion against God, the scriptures say they were whiter than milk, but now their face has become blacker than soot because of their sin and idolatry.

Lamentations 4:6-8 For the chastisement of the daughter of my people has been greater than the punishment of Sodom, which was overthrown in a moment, and no hands were wrung for her. (7) Her princes were purer than snow, whiter than milk; their bodies were more ruddy than coral, the beauty of their form was like sapphire. (8) Now their face is blacker than soot; they are not recognized in the streets; their skin has shriveled on their bones; it has become as dry as wood.

Those in Sardis who are clothed in soiled garments because their deeds were not complete are symbolic for the disobedient saints who are called and invited to the wedding banquet, but will not be ready when Jesus returns like a thief to rapture is faithful (chosen) bride when the tribulation begins.

And these called immature saints will be left behind and disciplined in the “outer darkness” of the tribulation, where they will “weep tears" of repentance when the wicked will “gnash their teeth” in hatred as they persecute the lukewarm church, Revelation 7:13-17, Lamentations 4:6-8, Luke 12:35-38.

Psalms 37:12-13 The wicked plots against the righteous and gnashes his teeth at him, (13) but the Lord laughs at the wicked, for he sees that his day (of wrath) is coming.

b10.png

The tribulation saints wash their sin stained robes
and make them white in the blood of the Lamb
Rev 7:13-14 Then one of the elders addressed me, saying, "Who are these, clothed in white robes, and from where have they come?" (14) I said to him, "Sir, you know." And he said to me, "These are the ones coming out of the great tribulation (the called lukewarm saints). They have washed their (sin soiled) robes (through repentance) and made them white in the blood of the Lamb. (17b) and God will wipe away every tear from their (weeping) eyes."

c47.1.png

The servant who was afraid buried his master's talent
The servant who was afraid and buried his master's talent in the ground that was cast into the darkness where there's weeping and gnashing of teeth, is similar to the dead church of Sardis whose deeds of faith and love were not complete, Matthew 25:14-30.

b23.png

Pray that you may be accounted worthy to escape the tribulation
The scriptures clearly point out that we need to be spiritually awake by following Jesus will for our lives in deeds and truth, if we want to be found worthy and chosen to attend the wedding banquet to escape God's discipline in the tribulation for his called disobedient saints, Luke 21:34-36.

Luke 21:34-36 "But watch yourselves (saints) lest your hearts be weighed down with dissipation and drunkenness and (the sinful) the cares of this life, and that day (of the tribulation) come upon you suddenly like a trap. (35) For it will come upon all who dwell on the face of the whole earth. (36) But stay awake at all times (by following Jesus in faithfulness and love), praying that you may be accounted worthy to escape all these things that are going to take place, and to stand before the Son of Man (as his faithful bride in white garments at the wedding banquet)."

Few are chosen to the banquet
The few saints in Sardis who will walk with Jesus dressed in white because they are worthy, represent the few chosen and mature saints that will enter the wedding banquet in heaven because their complete deeds of faith and love have made them worthy and sanctified, 2 Thessalonians 1:3-5, Revelation 3:4.

James 2:21-22 Was not Abraham our father justified by works when he offered up his son Isaac on the altar? (22) You see that faith was active along with his works, and faith was completed by his works;

1 John 4:12 No one has ever seen God; but if we love one another, God lives in us and his love is made complete in us.

Proverbs 3:3-4 Let not steadfast love and faithfulness forsake you; bind them around your neck; write them on the tablet of your heart. (4) So you will find favor and good success in the sight of God and man.

Entering the wedding banquet is a conditional reward for the obedient saints
Its important to recognize the mature bride of Christ that walks in righteous deeds of faith and love as she declares the gospel message of Jesus salvation, is how she clothes herself in a white wedding garment so that she may be chosen (and favorite) to enter the wedding banquet, Proverbs 3:3-4.

Therefore entering the wedding banquet is a conditional reward for the sanctified saints who follow Jesus in deeds and truth and not words or talk, Rev 19:7-8, 1 Corinthians 3:8-15.

1 John 3:18-19 Little children, let us not love in word or talk but in deed and in truth. (19) By this we shall know that we are of the truth and reassure our heart before him;

Many are called but few are chosen
The parable of the wedding banquet reveals all born-again children of God are saved by grace and invited (called) to the wedding banquet. However only a minority of saints will be obedient and chosen to enter the banquet when Jesus returns to rapture his bride that has made herself ready and is dressed in white, Revelation 19:7-8.

Our spiritual birth and salvation by faith in Jesus represents our justification which is an eternal gift.

However entering the wedding banquet is a reward for the chosen and faithful saints who have matured into a sanctified bride by following Jesus in righteous deeds of faith and love.

b15.png

The faithful and wicked servant
Mat 24:43-51 But know this, that if the master of the house (a called saint) had known in what part of the night (Jesus) the thief was coming (for his mature chosen bride), he would have stayed awake (in the will of the Lord) and would not have let his house (and heart) be broken into (by the sinful cares of the world). (44) Therefore (my little children) you also must be ready (walking in faith and love), for the Son of Man is coming (to rapture his sanctified bride at the sound of the trumpet) at an hour you do not expect.

c45.png

(45) "Who then is the faithful and wise (chosen) servant, whom his master has set over his household (of saints and unbelievers), to give them their (spiritual) food (of my Word) at the proper time? (46) Blessed is that (obedient) servant whom his master will find so doing when he comes. (47) Truly, I say to you, he will set him over all his possessions (at the wedding banquet).

(48) But if that wicked (called) servant says to himself, 'My master (Jesus) is delayed,' (49) and begins to beat his fellow (Christian) servants and eats and drinks with drunkards, (50) the master of that (called) servant will come on a day when he does not expect him and at an hour he does not know (51) and will cut him in pieces and put him with the hypocrites (in the tribulation). In that place there will be weeping (and repentance by the immature called saints who missed the rapture) and gnashing of teeth (by the wicked who will hate and persecute the lukewarm church).

b17.png

Put on the righteousness of the Lord Jesus Christ
Romans 13:13-14 Let us walk properly as in the daytime (following Jesus), not in (the spiritual darkness of) orgies and drunkenness, not in sexual immorality and sensuality, not in quarreling and jealousy. (14) But put on the Lord Jesus Christ (and his white garment of righteousness), and make no provision for the flesh, to gratify its desires.

Judgment begins at the household of God
1 Peter 4:16-17 Yet if anyone suffers as a Christian, let him not be ashamed, but let him glorify God in that name. (17) For it is time for judgment to begin at the household of God; and if it begins with us, what will be the outcome for those who do not obey the gospel of God?

"In the Blink of an Eye" is a video of several Christians who had traumatic dreams of missing the rapture because they were not walking in fellowship with Jesus. And it appears these dreams are an early warning that we need to have our spiritual lamps burning for Christ if we want to be ready for our Bridegroom's sudden return when he will rapture his faithful and sanctified bride.

1 John 2:28 And now, little children, abide in him, so that when he appears we may have confidence and not shrink from him in shame at his coming.

For many are called to the banquet but few are chosen, Mat 22:1-14.

One of the verses like Matt 7:13 Enter through the narrow gate for wide is the gate and broad the way leading to destruction, and many are those entering through it. which makes me wonder if such verses are not to be applied (strictly / mostly?) to the Church and not to choosing the church over the world...

1 Corinthians 15:46-48 But it is not the spiritual that is first but the natural, and then the spiritual. (47) The first man was from the earth, a man of dust; the second man is from heaven. (48) As was the man of dust, so also are those who are of the dust, and as is the man of heaven, so also are those who are of heaven.

The above scriptures say the natural came first as a picture for the spiritual.

Just as our physical birth on earth was a gift from God, our spiritual birth in God's kingdom is also a gift through faith in Christ and not by works.

And when we become married in this life we have grown from a child into maturity and adulthood by becoming faithful, morally responsible and loving. This natural process of growing mature for marriage is a picture for our spiritual growth and maturity that's necessary before we can be married to Jesus.

That is why the scriptures say the bride has made herself ready and her wedding garment of fine linen is the righteous deeds of the saints which is a sign of her spiritual maturity.

The many saints who are called to the wedding banquet that didn't have wedding garments represent the spiritually immature children of God who will be disciplined as sons and daughters in the tribulation, so they too will mature and have a more intimate and loving relationship with Jesus.

The called saints who are not mature and ready for the wedding banquet is represented by the young sister who had no breasts (of faith and love, 1 Thessalonians 5:8) that was not ready for her wedding day in Song of Solomon 8:8-10.

All saints are born-again and saved by grace, although we don't grow and mature in Christ at the same rate. But eventually we will all be brought up to the fullness of Christ.

Philippians 1:6 And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ.

And since Christians do not spiritually mature at the same rate, that is why the wedding banquet parable says many justified (immature) saints (kletos) are called and invited to the wedding banquet, but only the few chosen sanctified saints who are mature with wedding clothes of righteous deeds of faith and love will be found worthy when Jesus returns to rapture his bride who has made herself ready.

The natural came first as a picture for the spiritual.

One of the verses like Matt 7:13 Enter through the narrow gate for wide is the gate and broad the way leading to destruction, and many are those entering through it. which makes me wonder if such verses are not to be applied (strictly / mostly?) to the Church and not to choosing the church over the world...

Ted,
Its difficult to recognize what the narrow gate means in certain scriptures without the Holy Spirit and careful study.

Shortly after Matthew 7:13-14 that talks about entering the narrow gate that leads to life and the wide gate that leads to destruction, Jesus mentions the false prophets in Matthew 7:15-23, and he said he never knew them (ginosoko, a progressive growing knowledge as in a born-again child of God, 1 John 4:7).

In other words these false prophets were never born-again since they did not enter the narrow gate (Mat 7:13-14) through faith in Jesus which is the only door to eternal life, John 10:9.

Then for the saints who are born-again children of God there is a second narrow gate to the feast of Abraham Isaac and Jacob, Luke 13:24.

To enter this second door to the heavenly banquet you must be a mature sanctified saint walking in Christ's will for your life.

Its easy to be born-again and justified by faith, however to become a mature bride of Christ you must deny your flesh and take up your cross and follow Jesus if you want to enter the narrow door to the wedding banquet, which is a reward and not our salvation since born-again saints have already went through the first narrow door to eternal life which is Jesus.

So entering the first narrow gate (Matt 7:13) represents our salvation and justification by fatih in Jesus. And entering the second narrow gate to the wedding banquet (Luke 13:23-30) requires denying our self and walking in maturity and sanctification through following Jesus will for our lives.

The second gate or door to the wedding banquet is the same one the 5 foolish virgins (immature Christians) could not enter since their light and love for Jesus had grown dark.

I mentioned the narrow door of sanctification the saints need to enter through to be at feast of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob in this article.

Why will the first be last, and the last first?

The context of the Parable of the Banquet is that the wedding invitations went out, but those who received the invitations refused; and so the servants are sent out to bring in the lowly and the outcasts. It's as the Lord says elsewhere, "The prostitutes and tax collectors are entering the kingdom ahead of you".

The Pharisees saw themselves as the rightful guests of the Feast, but they refused to put on the wedding garments, they refused to honor the Master even when He stood in their midst--and so the invitations were revoked from the self-righteous and the arrogant, and have instead been given to the rejects, the lowly.

It's not about who will or will not "get saved" or "go to heaven"; it's about the arrogance of the religious elite, and God coming into the midst of dejected and rejected sinners. The Pharisee may boldly say to God, "I thank You Lord that I am not like these sinners, especially that, yuck! Tax collector!" But the tax collector, the sinner, does not even lift his eyes up to heaven, but holds them low to the ground, beats his chest, crying out, "Have mercy on me, a sinner".

The Pharisee was not justified, but the publican was. The Pharisee rejects the white robes of God's forgiveness, but the publican, in his lowliness and guilt, is forgiven.

The Great Wedding Banquet of the Lamb is not for the "spiritual", the "holy", the "righteous"--but for the outcasts, the rejects, the wretched, the poor, the nobodies.

We have a God who resists the proud and lifts high the lowly. He will level every mountain, and raise up every valley. In the kingdom of God it is not the lords and masters and kings who are greatest, but the slaves. It is the poor who inherit the kingdom, they and those who are poor in spirit. Even as it is the meek, the lowly, the nobodies who shall inherit the earth.

All who pursue glory in this life may find some trinket of worldly glory--in riches, in fame, in being "spiritual", or viewed as righteous--but all the glories of this world are moth and rust. Which is why true treasure are those treasures stored up in heaven. The treasures of kindness, generosity, of loving our neighbor, of feeding the hungry. These are the treasures that last. The gold we have purchased from our Lord which is purified by fire (Revelation 3:18).

It is not the grand old preacher with his multi-million dollar book deals and sold-out speaking venues that is at the top of the kingdom's hierarchy, but the nameless slave, the little old lady who voluntarily cleaned the church's bathrooms every week, without any thanks or recognition.

Greatness in the kingdom is not greatness as we perceive greatness.
The wedding invitations are gone out to the lowlifes, the junkies, and the harlots.

On that Great Day, whose side were we on? The side of the powerful, or the side of the weak and lowly? When we saw the one that was hungry, did we give him food or let him starve? When we saw the naked, did we shame him, or clothe him? When we saw the homeless man, did we give him alms? Did we buy him food? Did we provide him drink? Did we seek to help him find shelter? Or did we walk by, and even voice disgust--even if just in our own quiet thoughts.

True religion before God, says St. James, is to care for the widow and the orphan.
