There are different classes of angels: Seraphim, Cherubim, Living Creatures, human looking angels, etc. Some look like Sci Fi aliens, others are mistaken for human.
So the comment that angels are taller than us may apply to some angels; but certainly not all.
Yes I agree, I've read some stories long ago from those who have seen them and they were described as tall and fearsome. These of course were what was believed to be guardian angels. So since that is their job it would stand to reason that they would look big and scary. For what are they guarding against but the fallen angels and their effects on those they've been given to watch over?
There is also the story told by many men, some still alive today about the war between Israel and Egypt in 1967. The series, Against all Odds by Journalist David Greenspan tells it best but it was seen that G-d was fighting for Israel just like in the olden days, the Egyptians fled because they saw behind the ragged Israeli troops huge men that terrified them just by their looks and they fled.

The six day war called a 'Miracle' and 'Against all Odds'
In 1966 Jordan and Syria escalated their attacks against Israel, on May 15th 1967 Egyptian forces moved into the Sinai. 3 days later they expelled UN peacekeeping forces from Israels borders. 4 days later the Straits of Tiran were blocked to Israeli shipping. On May 25th 1967 the armies of Syria, Iraq, Saudi Arabia and Jordan moved their troops to the border of Israel.
Egyptian President Nassar stated at that time that Egypts main goal was the "Destruction of Israel" . The combined armies of these countries was around half a Million. 3,000 tanks, 1,000 Jet planes, all geared to attack Israel.
As a handful of Israeli scouts were patrolling around Jerusalem they were being tracked by Jordanian forces. When they became aware of them they tried to hide but were spotted by the Jordanians. As they advanced on them to shoot (and the Israelis had very little ammo left) they quickly looked up into the sky above the Israeli and started to shout, 'Abra heim'. Then they turned and all of them ran off as quickly over the rocky terrain as they could. The Israeli soldiers couldn't believe it, they had all assumed they were about to die.
They didn't understand what had happened but later while interrogating one of the Jordanian soldiers that was captured he explained what they saw.
"I tell you the truth, We suddenly look up and there was Abraham and behind him Angels with huge swords. "
