  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Who's Your Hero?

Here's a game I hope you'll enjoy.

I like to think about how terrific people are.  There are many people who make a big difference in our lives.  And, they come from many different areas.  Some don't seem to say or do much, but what they say or do can make a world of difference to somebody.  I've met many people who have really helped me to grow and learn.

So, here's how to do it:

Just choose a person from one of these categories who's made enough of a difference in your life to have earned the designation 'hero'.  You can write one from each of the categories, if you desire, and can post more from the same categories in your next posts.  You can also just write a designation, such as 'father', 'boss', 'stranger', 'teacher', etc., or you can write the person's name.

Miscellaneous

I'll start with this one:

From Miscellaneous, one of my heroes is Robert Stroud, the Birdman of Alcatraz.  He spent 53 years in solitary confinement on Alcatraz and worked nearly all of those years taking care of birds.  He learned a lot about bird diseases and wrote my favorite book, "Diseases of Birds"  which I used extensively rehabilitating sick and injured birds.

My teachers in the Christian school that I went to modelled happy marriages and happy families. I learned more about marriage through teachers' examples than I did anywhere else. And I have a happy marriage now because of it. I really value my education there.

Scripture: It would have to be Jesus as He's the one reason I have hope for forgiveness of sins and a place in heaven. A Person who changed my rebellious, and corrupt life back onto the right track. Without Him, I would never have found inner peace. Praise God!

Politics: Senior Minister Lee Kuan Yew (Singapore). He was the man who despite the separation from the Federation, despite Britain pulling out its armed forces after WWII, despite the economic woes problems plaguing Singapore, he was the one who built it up from scratch and in about 30 years, transfromed Singapore from Third World to First. A Salute!

Scriptures: Jesus, because no matter how much people hurt him he forgave them and loved them all the more.

Teachers: Mr. Stratton, for allowing me to recite something we had to memorize and say in front of the class, by myself after class with only him present.

Work: Dave & Michael, for always making me laugh through the rough stuff and for always being there and understanding me.

Family: Mom, for loving me always and for always teaching me how to be closer to God and teaching me how to have faith.
Step-Dad, for loving Mom

Politics: George Bush, for standing up for what he believes in and not backing down. For not caring what people think of him, and letting himself make mistakes and owning up to them.

School: My best friend, for always being there and loving me no matter what.

Miscellaneous: For everyone out there who respects other peoples opinion and doesn't judge them for it and loves them anyways.

One of my heroes has always been Charles Schultz. It has been evident in his comic strip "Peanuts" that he was a Christian and that it was a big part of his life. From what I have read, sometimes he had to fight with the papers to publish a strip that had a strong religious tone to it. He never seemed to back down and kept right on showing his faith through his characters. I find it very sad that probably one of the most loved and successful men in the comic strip business seen himself as a failure. My heart broke the day he died. And I still miss the antics of Charlie Brown and Snoopy!
