The entire Liturgy: http://www.faswebdesign.com/ECPA/Worship/James.html

1. Who wrote the "Liturgy of St. James"?

2. When and where was it written?

3. If this was the worship service in the early Church and the modern western churches seek to recreate or "get back to" the original... why is this service not being used?

4. If James was the first Bishop of Jerusalem and Jerusalem was the first Church, how is it that Peter is seen by some to be the head of "The Church"?

Christ is Risen!

Forgive me....:liturgy:

O sovereign Lord our God, condemn me not, defiled with a multitude of sins: for, behold, I have come to this Thy divine and heavenly mystery, not as being worthy; but looking only to Thy goodness, I direct my voice to Thee: God be merciful to me, a sinner; I have sinned against Heaven, and before Thee, and am unworthy to come into the presence of this Thy holy and spiritual table, upon which Thy only-begotten Son, and our Lord Jesus Christ, is mystically set forth as a sacrifice for me, a sinner, and stained with every spot. Wherefore I present to Thee this supplication and thanksgiving, that Thy Spirit the Comforter may be sent down upon me, strengthening and fitting me for this service; and count me worthy to make known without condemnation the word, delivered from Thee by me to the people, in Christ Jesus our Lord, with whom Thou art blessed, together with Thy all-holy, and good, and quickening, and consubstantial Spirit, now and ever, and to all eternity. Amen.

I don't know where and when, but what a beautiful liturgy

I don't know the answer either... I'm hoping someone does....

We know it's origin is 1st century... We know it came from Jerusalem...

James (step brother) of Christ was the first Bishop of Jerusalem which was the first Church.

Was this his liturgy?

Forgive me...

The "Liturgy of St. Mark" that went to Alexandria is almost "exaclty" the same as the "liturgy of St. James that went to Antioch.

They both came from Jerusalem, and were the prime examples of "how to" have worship services....

In my mind (IMHO), this (among others) is what was transmitted via verbal "Tradition" to the Churches....

Forgive me....

How much has it changed since the first century? The version I read has some anachronisms, such as the Nicene Creed.

Honestly not much at all.... but I'm still in search of the "most" original... I'm certain it will be in Greek... but I would like to compare the wording....

What I have posted here is so very simular to the Liturgy used in my Parish.... It's almost verbatim.... a few of the words have been changed but have kept the same meaning...

for instance:

People: And to your spirit.

We say: And with thy spirit.

Are you saying the Nicene Creed was part of a first century liturgy?

No, not at all.... but it did develop from what the Church had always been practicing... and had always understood....

To be an orthodox statement what is stated must be: What all Christians, Everywhere, have believed from the beginning....

This version that I have linked is modernized including such things as the Creed... and also curiosly having removed much of the long commemoration of Saints...

As soon as I find a more "Original" text I will post it....

check out the Divine Liturgy of the Holy Apostle and Evangelist Mark, Disciple of the Holy Apostle Peter:
http://www.ccel.org/fathers2/ANF-07/anf07-64.htm
i reckon just about every catholic, orthodox, and traditional protestant church could use this Liturgy without any problem.

Relative to James being the Bishop of Jerusalem St. John Chrysostom in his Hom 88 says--

'And if any should say, "How then did James receive the chair at Jerusalem?" I would make this reply that He appointed PETER teacher, not of the chair, BUT OF THE WORLD'

Ah, but it is. The Liturgy of St. James is the basis for many of the Eastern Liturgies and is celebrated even in some Catholic Churches.
