who will you vote for?

A note for those thinking of voting on principle rather than for the lesser of two evils--

There was a third-party candidates' debate in Cleveland today. It was not telecast excep on the internet, but it is slated to be shown this weekend (I would guess on CSPAN). I don't when, however, so check the listings if you are interested. The participants were, I think, Bob Barr (Libertarian), Chuck Baldwin (Constitution), and Ralph Nader (Independent).

Of course they would debate on favor of having people vote independant, how ever I don't think any of them is any better then McCain, just look different is all.

I'll look for that, it should be interesting. And yeah, it's probably on C-SPAN. But I don't need help deciding. I always liked Bob Barr, and I've been an LP member since I was first eligible to vote in 1972. There'd be no use my voting for McCain anyway. Since my state (WA) is solidly Obama, it'd still be a protest vote. That being the case, there's no downside to casting my protest vote for the one I actually agree with.

I really wish more third-party candidates had a prayer of winning.

I'd really like a choice beyond "That One" and "This One" ya know?

Well, they certainly hold views and advocate policies that are different from McCain's. But more than that...if you vote for McCain in Michigan (where I see you live) you are throwing your vote away. He is so far behind in Michigan that he pulled his campaign out for the most part--and announced it! So if you vote for him, it proves nothing except that he lost.

BUT if you vote for a third-party candidate (and you have the whole range of values to choose between there, from Left to Right) you make a statement that will be noted by the press and the major parties. It's a modest accomplishment, to be sure, but it's potentially better than registering nothing at all by voting McCain in Michigan.

I'm voting for McCain one of my main reason is he antiabortion.

I don't believe in even a little bit of the poles accuracy, besides Its never a waste to vote for who you support. I understand the idea of a 3rd party canidate but the time to make that happen is before an election not during, as I feel its your vote that will be thrown away because 3rd parties have absolutely no chance, so why not at least support a conservative party and help keep the liberals out of office.

I will vote for Dino Rossi (R) for governor - he almost won last time, and has a good shot at it this time. But there's no use voting for McCain in WA. I know my state, I've been active in politics here since before I was old enough to vote, during Nixon's first term. WA is solidly for Obama, polls or no polls. That being the case, voting for McCain is just as much "throwing my vote away" as voting for Barr, so why not vote for the one I actually like instead of the one I'd have to settle for? Of course, none of this applies for those in another state.

Well, if McCain WERE a Conservative, I'd be wavering. But voting for him is choosing between a radical (Obama)and a liberal (McCain). We've got to have an alternative, for America's sake if nothing else.

And as said before, if you live in a state where McCain is going to be soundly defeated, you are throwing your vote away, whereas if you vote third party, that is noticed and can make a difference in coming elections...keeping the Republicans from making the same mistake again, for example. BUT there is another consideration. If you vote for someone whose vote totals are so small that the media don't report them, nothing is accomplished that way either, except for your peace of mind. When I advocated a consideration of making a statement with a vote for a third party candidate, that assumes that there will be enough others voting with you to make a statement. Only Bob Barr and Ralph Nader are in that category. The other dozen or so third party candidates will not draw enough votes for anyone to notice...and being noticed is the whole point.

BTW, I don't follow what you might have in mind when saying that the time to support a third party is before the election. How would that accomplish anything--to put up a third party candidate and then not support him?

As for the polls, it's unfortunately true that they have been pretty accurate in the past few elections, although only certain polls (so you have to know which one to lean on) and only with the presidency. The further down the list of candidates one goes, the less reliable the polling.

For what it is worth... I will be voting Republican, so I will be voting for McCain. Though I will be casting my vote this week - I will not be casting my hope...
