Stupid question, but how does one defend grasshoppers having only 4 legs. I would love to know the mental gymnastics needed for that.

There a number of possible ways to explain this:
1. Back then grass hoppers were not considered to be insects. It's only been recently that science (inspired though Satan) has decreed that grass hoppers are insects.

2. While grass hoppers may have six appendages only four are actually used as legs.

3. And of course the ever popular "spiritual grasshoppers" only have four legs.
