Passages where there are differences in translation, as in the Samuels, where, for example, it is written 40,000 horses or horsemen, and in another it is written 4,000 is neither here nor there when it comes to the meaning of the passage. God is sovereign. That is the underlying message. There is not one little translation error that changes what God is conveying to us. Not one.

We need to believe tht God has preserved His Word and it all just falls into place. It is true.
so... is God conveying 4000 or 40,000? That looks like an error in conveyance to me

Well, to be fair, whatever the original number was, it was probably not intended to reflect reality in the first place. The idea that events should be recorded as accurately as possible, and that to include details that are not literally true is deceptive, is rather modern.
The historian Herodotus, for example, would write about the Amazon tribe (which actually did exist) and accurately describe some aspects of them, but mingle in myths to make the stories interesting. Nothing wrong with that when he wrote it, that's what historians did. Makes tracking down the truth a b...bear for modern historians, though.

And, not that this clears up the original problem at all, but it's thought by some that the number 1,000 was also used to describe some type of military unit, rather than, literally, 1000 people. So, it might mean 4 or 40...regiments, I guess.

So if the bible is corrupt and not trustable, what do we have?
(To the christian posters that don't believe the bible.(Oxymoron? lol))

The Bible still exists, but it needs to be examined intelligently. Just, "I saw it there, [translated into English, through my 21st Century American/European eyes, without looking up the context, without understanding the idioms, without understanding which parts were intended to be literal and which never were, without understanding the goals of the speaker] in black and white, so it must mean what I think it means," is just not a useful way to read it.

God is God. The Bible is not.
