  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

As far as jazz goes I play drums, vibes, and various percussives. (I also play with synths, organ, and a bit of guitar/bass but not in the jazz idiom.) I'm not much of a traditional jazzer really-- more of a free-improv & fusion kinda guy-- but I've played in a couple big bands and a bunch of small combos over the years...

well as you know their are several scales for jazz. Ionian being the regular old, everybody learns this Major Scale. Then you got your dorian, phrygian, lydian, mixolydian, aeolian, and locrian. There's way more than that too. For the sake of telling you the notes, I'll just type each of the scales in C Major modes. All of these are concert pitches by the way.

Ionian
C-D-E-F-G-A-B-C

Dorian
D-E-F-G-A-B-C-D

Phrygian
E-F-G-A-B-C-D-E

Lydian
F-G-A-B-C-D-E-F

Mixolydian
G-A-B-C-D-E-F-G

Aeolian
A-B-C-D-E-F-G-A

Locrian
B-C-D-E-F-G-A-B

When I practice these scales, I first do them in the circle of fifths, and then the reverse circle of fifths just to make sure I dont memorize a pattern. Sorry I took up so much room!

thanks for your answer...problem is practicing these scales doesn't get me to the point i want to be. there are certain leads in say, playing jazz that seems, to my ear anyhow, standard. the riff in going from one note to another incorporates one or more tones leading to a dominant note. sic.
if i want to go from a c to a g, i might want to play d e f like a triplet. hope i am making myself clear.
