TEHRAN, Iran - The president of Iran again lashed out at Israel on Friday and said it was "heading toward annihilation," just days after Tehran raised fears about its nuclear activities by saying it successfully enriched uranium for the first time.

"Like it or not, the Zionist regime is heading toward annihilation," Ahmadinejad said at the opening of a conference in support of the Palestinians. "The Zionist regime is a rotten, dried tree that will be eliminated by one storm."

The Palestinian issue is a big deal for the elites in Iran. The average Iranian is not all fired up about wiping Israel off the map.

It's clear that President Ahmadinejad likes to hear himself talk and make outrageous comments to get noticed and quoted in the news.

For the U.S. to start a war with Iran over stupid comments by someone without the ability to make them come to fruition would be even more stupid. Ahmadinejad doesn't have his finger on the nuclear button, as Bush and Putin do, and he never will.

Too bad it's not the average Iranian in charge...

You play it off as 'likes to hear himself talk'... yet when it comes out that the US has made plans (which it should) for bombing Iran... there's a world crisis and Bush needs to be impeached?

The US doesn't have its finger on the 'nuclear button'... stop hyping the US threat and downplaying the Iranian threat...

1) Ahmadinejad doesn't have the ability to do much harm. Bush now has a growing mess in Afghanistan because he took his eyes off the ball to invade Iraq which is now a debacle. Bush has done a ton of damage internationally, and domestically as well(out of control government spending, national debt going through the roof, increased federal government power, etc.).

2) The last time I heard the U.S. has thousands of nuclear warheads. Iran has zilch, zero, nada.

Iran is pushing for a showdown with the US.

They are doing their very best to send the wrong signals if they're not.

Iran said it could defeat any American military action over its controversial nuclear drive, in one of the Islamic regime's boldest challenges yet to the United States. "You can start a war but it won't be you who finishes it," said General Yahya Rahim Safavi, the head of the Revolutionary Guards and among the regime's most powerful figures.

All of which have been detargeted and both the US and Russians are getting rid of warheads at a very fast pace. The US hasn't introduced a new type of warhead or delivery system in well over a decade, something no other nuclear power in the world can say.

There's no backing to say that Bush and Putin have thier finger on the nuclear button.

It would be interesting to know the full context of the Iranian Presidents speeches. Infact it would be great to know the full context of George W Bush's speeches as well. From what I see on the media the whole situation looks irrepairable, which is serious indeed.
Iran calls USA the Great Satan, and Bush called Iran part of the "Axis of evil". Not exactly a foundation for diplomacy. This planet is heading for serious trouble - Shortly a lot of those tricky parts in Revelation may start to become a lot more clear.

The U.S. could launch a nuclear barrage within minutes of President Bush giving the command.

Anyone remember another Middle-Eastern government official who blustered a lot, and we didn't take him seriously, either? Ladies and Gentlemen, I give you the Iraqi Information Minister!!!

http://www.welovetheiraqiinformationminister.com/

"God will roast their stomachs in hell at the hands of Iraqis."

"They're coming to surrender or be burned in their tanks."

"I can say, and I am responsible for what I am saying, that they have started to commit suicide under the walls of Baghdad. We will encourage them to commit more suicides quickly."

"We have them surrounded in their tanks"

"Lying is forbidden in Iraq. President Saddam Hussein will tolerate nothing but truthfulness as he is a man of great honor and integrity. Everyone is encouraged to speak freely of the truths evidenced in their eyes and hearts."

That doesn't mean he has his "finger on the button."

If a nuclear force is to be a credible deterrant, rapid reaction is a necessity. Every other nuclear power on Earth (with the probable exception of North Korea) can launch a nuclear attack within minutes of national leadership giving the order for that very reason.

Would you say Jacques Chriac or Tony Blair have their repective fingers on the button? What about Singh or Hu?

I think that the thirty years between our ages creates a semantic problem.

Having grown up during the Cold War I use the term "having his finger on the button" to simply mean that the president can order a nuclear attack at a moment's notice. During the Cold War it was anticipated that the president would do so in response to a first strike by the Soviet Union.

You are probably correct that its a semantic problem.

I see it as looking for any reason to order the attack.
