Who God is

"Anyone who does not love does not know God because God is love." -1 John 4:8

So then I ask myself "what is love?" so I look at 1 Corinthians 13:4-8. One of the characteristics of love is that love is not jealous. So why does it say somewhere in Exodus "I am a jealous God"?

Can someone please explain this?

In the old testament verses were made to the Jewish people, in a phase where they were need a treatment less intellectual. In the phase when Jesus had came a new approach could be shown about God's love, closer to reality.
