(sidelight)--This great hymn writer lost his life in the what is called the great Ashtabula Bridge Tragedy. Here is the complete story. The bridge was designed by Amasa Stone, who took the Howe Truss design (a truss for covered bridges--a wood/iron combination), and converted it to an under track truss of all iron. The bridge failed on 12/29/1876--very shortly after its completion--many were burned alive in the terrible crash.
