White or Black?

For casual games, my non-binding policy is to play black when playing against a less experienced player; otherwise a random draw decides who goes first, unless the game happens in my house, in which case I give the opponent the option of deciding whether he wants to pick a color, or use a random draw.
I have not played in a tournament in a long time but if I did I would want to play white, given the choice.
And when studying from books, I generally play (i.e., explore alternative moves) as white, because most diagrams are drawn from white's perspective.

White is best when you have two top players playing against each other, but as a so-so player who plays against other so-so players, I'd rather move second and figure out what my opponent is doing.
