Anyone know which tribe from the Shevatim goes to which stone on the breastplate of decision? Thanks! PG:wave:

Doing a small bit of web and concordance searching........

Now, remembering that Hebrew is written from right to left – so 1) the stones will be set in their rows from (R) to (L) and the names of the sons/tribes, by birth order, would be inscribed in the same fashion….

Sh’mot 28:17 And thou shalt set in it settings of stones, even four rows of stones: the first row shall be a sardius, a topaz, and a carbuncle: this shall be the first row. 18 And the second row shall be an emerald, a sapphire, and a diamond. 19 And the third row a ligure, an agate, and an amethyst. 20 And the fourth row a beryl, and an onyx, and a jasper: they shall be set in gold in their inclosings. 21 And the stones shall be with the names of the children of Israel, twelve, according to their names, like the engravings of a signet; every one with his name shall they be according to the twelve tribes.

Go here for more information from the Temple Institute http://www.templeinstitute.org/current-projects/breastplate.html
The twelve stones for the breastplate of the High Priest. The stones are set in golden settings and engraved with the names of the twelve tribes of Israel. The garment is woven and the stones are attached with golden thread.

P.S. Something a little extra.......
In my wanderings I found this neat and quisical site - check it out!! http://mennoniteinfoctr.tripod.com/index/id30.html

I find this subject interesting. I have a book on precious stones folklore and it has a section on the High Priests breastplate. In reading through the various explanations of what each stone could be ( what exactly IS a carbuncle? sounds like something that should be removed from your foot! ;) ) I found myself wondering about the descriptions of certain stones, these would be like the jasper which is a combination of various minerals, none of which I know is to be clear but opaque. But I did find this from a mineral site:

Jasper is an opaque, cryptocrystalline variety of quartz that takes a high polish and is used as a gemstone. It is usually stained by impurities and occurs in various colours, such as red, green, yellow, and blue. When the colours are arranged in bands, the mineral is called riband jasper; a variety containing alternating bands of red and green is known as Siberian jasper. Mottled yellow or brown varieties of jasper are called Egyptian jasper. Agate jasper is intermediate in structure between true jasper and chalcedony . Inclusions of red jasper occur in heliotrope. The jasper mentioned in the Bible as one of the stones in the breastplate of the high priest and as the foundation of the wall of the New Jerusalem is believed to have been a dark green, opalescent stone. The jasper of the ancients was a partially translucent stone, probably containing some chalcedony and a variety of the latter known as chrysoprase.

Notice that it says that jasper of the ancients was a translucent stone? This fits with my theory that all the stones on the breastplate where translucent, like different colors of quartz or diamonds, such as rubys and emeralds, topaz, etc. This would substantiate something else I read about the use of the breastplate as a way of communication with God about the certain tribes. I found somewhere ( I don't recall just where) that when the High Priest inquired of the Lord about certain things regarding the tribes that He would answer by "lighting up" the appropriate gem corresponding to the tribe. This would require a clear stone I should think.

Does anyone know more about this?

actually it is said, in the Talmud and in Josephus, I think that the answer was communicated by the spelling out of the answer -> by the individual letters lighting within the names of the breastplate. All the letters of the hebbrew alefbet are represented in the names of the 12 tribes
