  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Hi all,

I am in the market for a study bible and would like some recommendations from fundamentalists or conservatives.
I am non-denominational although I adhere most closely to a Baptist doctrine.
The only requirements for me really are that it must be KJV (I will not consider another translation) with a literal, conservative commentary.

So, what do you recommend?

The Companion Bible: King James Version (KJV) by E. W. Bullinger, Publisher: Kregel Publications, An in-depth study Bible for those who seek to know and understand God's Word in the trusted and familiar language of the King James Version. Extensive marginal notes with appropriate Hebrew and Greek analysis provide alternate translations of critical passages and call attention to other relevant texts.

Great idea because the King James English is not the language we speak today and many people just can't understand it. So if she wants to be saddled with that at least it will help her understand it. I'm sure she's aware there are translations that don't need to be translated but to each his own.

I strongly recommend the Old Scofield Edition of the KJV, which is available through Bible Truth Publishers, Addison, IL. It has good notes and commentaries to help in understanding. I have used it for years and find it very helpful; though we must all admit that any versions of the Bible by men are going to have some errors.

The nice thing about the Scofield Edition is showing what Bible teachers have found down through the years with corrections in the margin of any errors. One cannot find this in all the modern versions.

Thanks for the replies everyone, it's not so much that I would like a 'translation' (I find the KJV is getting much easier to understand the more I read it), but some scholarly commentary - I'm not going to a church at the moment and I feel like I'm missing out most on getting to study and learn about passages in depth. I know that it's all just from men in the end but it's the next best thing to going to school myself!
I have had a lot of recommendations now for the Old Scofield, think I might give that a go.
Thanks again!

I really like the MacArthur Study Bible. John MacArthur's theology is fundamentalist, young-earth creationist, and his teaching closely follows along Baptist lines. I have it in the NKJV, which substitutes contemporary English words for ones that have fallen out of usage (you instead of thee, do for doest, have for hast, etc.) while retaining the poetry and flavor of the King James version. Check it out.

In the KJV, you have,

Matthew Henry's Study Bible

KJV Study Bible by Zondervan

Henry Morris Study Bible

All 3 are excellent and have extensive study notes. If you have the money, get all three. As to those complaing about using a study bible, all they are, are condensed commentaries, to which many great preachers have used. You will also find that those who do not use commentaires and such, are the ones that are the most confused and in error.

Commentaries are still only the opinion of those writing the commentaries. Your assumption they are without error is incorrect. God never makes mistakes. Anyone who wants His help can get it.

Except I didn't make that assumption. The do have error and are to be taken with a grain of salt. I guess my only assumption was that most people already know this.

As far as the rest of your post, I agree.

Study Bibles with an included commentary are always a compromise. A full Matthew Henry Commentary is six volumes. Any Study Bible including the MHC is sure to be greatly edited. What I did when I read the KJV, I used a separate commentary, in my case, Unger's Bible Commentary of the Old Testament (2 volumes), and the Bible Knowledge Commentary (New Testament).
