The thing that did it for me was when Blizzard sued FreeCraft (an open source RTS engine project) for "copyright infringement" -- because the name was apparently too similar to StarCraft.

(the fact that I think their games aren't great doesn't help matters)

Ok, well I don't know why you don't like the games cause they are really good.

StarCraft hands down.

PCGamer (which I consider to be the best gaming magazine) put it it at #6 of the top 50 best games of all time (October 2001 issue) right above Diablo and Diablo 2 in #7. The Warcraft series at #22.

Of course now thats just their take on it, but I agree with it.

Thank you for that info. I know they are high on gamespot, gamespy and IGN too.

I am really surprised at how many people enjoy playing games from the Warcraft series. In my opinion, it's just cheap extra features that older RTS games (such as Starcraft, Total Annihilation etc.) didn't have during their time, and I'd agree that the majority of people would believe so as well, probably not on ChristianForums, but elsewhere.

I've had addictions to Warcraft III, Starcraft, Diablo I and II and to a lesser extent Warcraft I and II, so it was hard to make a decision. Ultimately I chose Warcraft III because it has the most versatile editor which adds the most replay value. I have to admit that Starcraft is probably better than Warcraft III when played in Melee mode, but there are so many trigger-based Warcraft III maps that I have loved and become obsessed with. In particular I love Helm's Deep, though since there's so many of those maps that doesn't really help anyone know what I'm talking about. But I've found and tweaked one until it is nearly evenly balanced and always ends with a valiant last defense before Gandalf arrives (if he arrives, I suppose). There are various other maps I have enjoyed as well, mainly rpg type maps.

But the strategy is good enough for me. Though it is a little slow paced in comparison to Starcraft there's just something magical about rampaging with a small contingent of elite units, something you almost never do in Starcraft (well, if you want to win that is). And you have to love the Pandaren Brewmaster.
