Okay, I'm not sure that this is the proper forum, but I'll start here and maybe move to others later...

I would like to know, preferably from the most cynical among us, what charitable organizations that they find..

a) the most trustworthy
b) the most important or worthwhile

I'm looking for organizations that actually help PEOPLE...not concerned at this point with animal or conservationist type groups.

thanks.

ps- if you can direct me, or move this post to a forum more suitable or more highly viewed, I would appreciate it.

I think worthwhile is quite subjective. For me, The Special Olympics. Why? Because I have a son that participates in it and I see firsthand how much it means to him and how much it helps others. Trying to be more objective, the United Way or the Red Cross.

I highly recommend Ministry Watch to determine which ministries manage their donations well and do what they say they will do with the funds they receive. Ministry Watch grades on many different things, including transparency in their accounting.

MinistryWatch.com Home Page

I have several local charities that I support that would be unknown to people in other areas (i.e. Our Local Children's Shelter, Food Bank, Women's Shelter). I mention these because many localities provide life-sustaining work like this that is usually run by all volunteers. All but minimal overhead like electricity goes directly to the people in need. There are more people in need than ever, and it's nice to know that your donations aren't spent on lavish salaries, mansions, or foolishly.

In terms of large Ministries that are well-known to everyone, the Salvation Army is one of my favorites, and they always hit the "A" List at Ministry Watch. The Salvation Army is run in an outstanding, loving, Christian manner. They squeeze all the love they can out of every donation - whether it be money, food, clothing, effort, etc.

Good News! -- The Holy Bible is the WORD OF GOD! -- God The Father, God The Son, God The Holy Spirit - The Creator Of All Things! -- "GOD'S GRACE" and "OUR WORKS" -- Thanksgiving Proclamations ( 1623 to 1863 ) -- Thanksgiving Proclamations ( 1961 to 2001 ) -- JESUS CHRIST - VERY GOD - LORD - SAVIOUR - MESSIAH - KING

It can be quite a mind game to figure out where money is best spent.
I know that some charities like United Way pay their top administrators quite a bit. A local shelter once told me they couldn't afford to pay for all the changes they needed in order to comply with being an organization under their umbrella.

I like Operation Blessing -- they have brought medicine and food, and disaster relief in a very organized and compassionate way.

There's also the concept of teaching to fish, rather than dumping money and creating dependencies. When I think through the whole topic, I usually come down to the conclusion that microfinancing is a genius method to help people.

Heifer International seems to strive to deliver needed items directly -- like heifers. The problems seem to arise when organizations get so big that they lose control of where the money is going.

Greedy people find ways to use systems. Look at the incredible amount of Internet theft. We tend to be naive, thinking that everyone is basically good. Assuming all ethical principles are universal.

I have heard stories of people who started up NGO's just so they could use the organization to get goods to their friends and families. When people have to scramble for their survival, some get overly creative.

I used to volunteer at an Oxfam charity shop, they seemed very trustworthy and they operate all across the world, in Africa, Asia, Latin America, Middle East and the United Kingdom. I see you're from the US, I'm not sure if they operate there, but maybe you can donate online if that's what you're interested in doing.

You can see Oxfam's latest activities here if you go on their website and look at the news blog (I can't post links yet).

I hope this helps! :)

The one thing I WILL say is-it's not the United Way. They keep over 60% of their donations for "overhead". Read about them & the money they collected for 911 & the Katrina that they did not want to "re-distribute". When a charity needs oversight, it's tooo big. Keep it local, for the most par--if every community takes care of every community then we'll all be ok. There would not be as much need for government intercession if the churches did what they were supposed to. Think about it, ski trips for the youth or houses for the homeless, Really think about it!

Someone who ran a long-standing shelter told me that they could not afford the paperwork required to even obtain United Way donations. They tried for a couple years and gave up.

I also know someone who did work on a UW director's property -- they lived in an extremely large home.

They serve a purpose in generating interest in volunteerism and altruism, creating lifestyles of giving. And they are probably able to generate and apply large donations better. But yes, loads of overhead.

I realize this thread is two years old and the OP has already chosen a non-profit to support, nevertheless, I try not to miss an opportunity to create awareness of these great organizations. :)

====

The first one, one that meets a very basic need that we can all understand, is Charity:Water. They were founded a couple years ago by a former night club promoter who hit rock bottom and decided to connect with Mercy Ship. After his time there he realized the tremendous need for clean water around the world and set out to do something about it. So he went to the companies that sponsored his former life and convinced them to sponsor this new endeavor. With their support covering any overhead costs of running the non-profit, 100% of the donations given go directly to the water wells projects. You can look at all their information on their website: charity: water

There's some staggering statistics out there about just how dire the need for clean water is and how much it can improve the quality of life overall for our brothers and sisters in developing nations.

Other than that one, which is one of my favorites. There's some other, equally incredible non-profits that are very much worthwhile.

One of them is International Justice Mission. It's a team of Christian lawyers and volunteers who have put together this organization that combats all the various forms of human trafficking.

From this Wikipedia article:

International Justice Mission (IJM) is a U.S.-based evangelical Christian non-profit human rights organization [1] that operates in countries all over the world to rescue victims of individual human rights abuse. IJM works to combat human trafficking including the commercial sexual exploitation of children, forced labor slavery, illegal detention, police brutality and illegal land seizure. Based on referrals of abuse received from relief and development organizations, IJM conducts professional investigations of the abuses and mobilizes intervention on behalf of the victims. Though it is a faith-based organization IJM assists victims regardless of their religion. The fourfold purpose of IJM is victim relief, perpetrator accountability, victim aftercare, and structural transformation.[2]
A few years back one of the leaders of that non-profit spoke at my college group and it was pretty profound getting to hear some testimony about what they're doing.

There's more information available on their website: International Justice Mission - IJM Home

A third that I'll mention is Uganda Orphans Fund. If you're interested in something similar to IJM but perhaps a little bit more focused, they're an excellent NPO. I got to travel to Uganda with the founder, Duncan Hill, about five years ago and to see just how exactly they're being "Jesus with skin on" to these children is utterly incredible.

These are children who were orphaned because of the twenty-year civil war that has been waged by Joseph Kony, and these children were forced into either serving in the rebel army (Lord's Resistance Army/LRA) or into sex slavery.

The Uganda Orphans Fund has been working to bring freedom, love and compassion to these children by building homes for them, caring for their day-to-day needs, reuniting them with family that they had been separated from, educating them, etc.

It's extremely compelling and definitely worth supporting.

There's a lot of interesting information and media on their website: Uganda Orphans Fund
