  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I try not to read just one version of the bible but I usually two bibles I have got. The first is the Student Bible which is in the Updated NASB and the other is The Extreme Bible in NKJV. I don't read NIV that much anymore, just sometimes. And I will occasionally dip into the Message bible if I want a change!!!

bit difficult to read though - would you give a new christian that to read? And most bibles are the word of God - hehehehhehe - you mean most literal? Well the NKJV and NASB are very accurate aswell, especially when studying the Hebrew and Greek words and seeing what the translators wrote! :p

Oh and by the way I like your avatar!!!

Yes, I would and have given the KJV to new Christians.

Psalm 12
6 The words of the LORD are pure words: as silver tried in a furnace of earth, purified seven times.
7 Thou shalt keep them, O LORD, thou shalt preserve them from this generation for ever.

On no. A lackey for the KJV. revised 4 times already and heavily based on someone else's earlier translation. Written before the discovery of Codex Sinaiticus and Alexandrinus among other ancient witnesses.
Yup. It's the "purest" translation out there. But they boys from yesteryear do a good job of translating the perfect tense.

I know I've been pimping the NIV study bible a lot here.
I should clarify. I don't read the NIV too much although I don't have anything against it. But this particular bible has tons of good information. It's function as a study bible is about as good as it gets. I've heard the NAS study bible tried to be its counterpart but falls short.

You really need more than one translation. That or you need to learn Greek and Hebrew.

I am a big fan of the NLT as I like its clarity and ease of reading, but I realise the need to be careful with dynamic translations. I would definately recomend it for people reading through the whole Bible, or whole books, but when studying with the NIV to hand as well, you certainly notice the odd difference in emphesis.
Michael Wilcock (auther of several BST books) recomends the RV of 1885 as the most accurate translation for study purposes. Does anyone have a well informed view of this?

I've read from the same bible since i first came to the Lord (6 years) ..its the NKJV.....i dont really like reading from any others because this one is special to me and it has all my many markings...tis starting to look slightly scruffy though lol! I'm thinking of getting an amplified one soon too.

NKVJ, KJV and NIV.

I agree with Cheese when he says you need more then one translation. Using all 3 has really helped me understand things better. And my NIV is the NIV Study Bible and that's incredible when it comes to giving information. When you want to study more it gives you what a certain phrase meant when it was written. It's really nice.

For actual reading and devotions, I use the NKJV. I use to use NIV, but I decided to switch over. I really like the NKJV.
