My husband and I went to the Christian book store today to see if they carry any books on Messianic Judaism. All I could find is one praise and worship CD. Where do you purchase your books and other research info?

but how do I know what I am getting there? I mean, for instance, if I put in "Christian" in amazon.com I will get such a wide variety of stuff (some really good, some very misleading). Is there some way of learning of which books are good and helpful?

I've heard that David Stern has some pretty good stuff, and I like Brad Young. That's a pretty good place to start.

Also, I am a student. So free information (like the web) is also a great place. If anyone has some informative sites to that might explain things for us who are really new to learning about MJ, please post.

By far and away I highly... HIGHLY reccomend a three part set by Avi ben Mordechai, Messiah volumes 1-3. However, volume 3 deals with very mature and deep aspects of Jewish thought, so I would point one who is looking for a great intro to volumes 1-2.

A couple other really really good ones to add to the list would be:
Paul the Jewish Theologian
and
Jesus the Jewish Theologian

Both excellent starters and will put you light years ahead in understanding the Jewish background to the NT.

Still, I'd have to reccomend Messiah volumes 1-2 above everything.

Also, is that the full title? Like mbams, I can't afford them, so I need to make it as easy for my librarian to find them as I can.

I'm not Yafet, but I have read both books, and I can tell you that they are pretty easy to understand. That title should be enough to find it in your library, although I'd be a little shocked if they actually have it.

If you want to check Avi out, he has an internet radio show at www.inforadionet.com on Sunday mornings at 11 eastern time. He's currently discussing HaShem's divorce from Israel mentioned in Hosea and Ezekiel.

Avi is very good at explaining things from a foundational point of view. While he may get a tad on the deeper side at times, he certainly will make it easy for you to get there

Well, I doubt you will find these in any library. They are only sold through Avi's website (and maybe few other messianic websites). I completely understand the money issues... but let me just say this one things:

If I had to own only two books these would be it.

It's worth the small investment.

Here is Stern's Complete Jewish Bible, and his commentary on the "New" Testament is listed there on the site too. I like these -- some don't care for Stern, but a good many Messianics use this Bible and Commentary set. Like me I use a lot of others too

There are also a lot of good articles online... and some real error... just glean the pearls and if it looks fishy, it prolly is. Feel free to ask the MJ folks here about articles though -- we LOVE to critique things (can you tell that about us by now? Bahahahaaa!) Any site DH and I check out online, we immediately go to their "articles" link and check out a few of the biggy issues to get an idea of what kind of place it is and what doctrine they espouse.
