"taking five minutes out of your day for God"
"...I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also." John 14:3
Over the last forty years there have been a number of momentous occasions that have affected the world as a whole. Some very cheering others downright depressing. Some of us may be too young to remember them(??!!), for others this is imprinted in the memory as though it only happened yesterday. In a list of some of the most unforgettable events that I gleaned from the internet came the following: Where were you?
(1963) The Assassination of President John F Kennedy
(1968) The shooting of Martin Luther King Jr
(1969) Man Lands on the moon
(1986) The explosion of the Space Shuttle Challenger
(1989) The Collapse of the Berlin Wall
(1989) The student demonstration in Tiannemen Square, China
(1990) Nelson Mandela is released from prison, apartheid ends.
(1997) The death of Princess Diana in a high speed car chase
(2001) The attacks on the World Trade Center and Pentagon
Am sure there are many others that people can think about, but the main concern here is the effect these events had on the world as a whole. Not only were the global press reporting these events for weeks after they happened but they remained the topic of conversation for many long after the event.
This week there will be reflections and memorials on the attacks of September 11, 2001. They will come to the fore even more so in light of the almost inevitable attack on Iraq, but Jesus tells us that these things will happen (Matt 24,25). He clearly stated that towards the end of time people will cry for peace and there will be none. There will be wars and rumours of wars.
Looking back on the list of memorable events above only three of them provided hope and pleasure. God promises that he is returning for us soon. To end the nonsense in this world. To create a new heaven and earth. He asks us to be ready. The question should be then, not where were you...but where are you?
Father in heaven, We pause for reflection. We think of the pain and suffering and misery in this world and can't wait for your soon coming to free us from this. We pray that in all this that we stay focused on you. Grant us these mercies and protection in Jesus name. Amen
