Exodus 40:

20 He [Moses] took the testimony and put it into the ark, and put the poles on the ark and set the mercy seat above on the ark. 21 And he brought the ark into the tabernacle and set up the veil of the screen, and screened the ark of the testimony, as the LORD had commanded Moses.
Behind the veil was the area of the Most Holy Place, or the Holy of Holies. Only the high priest could enter, and only once a year on the Day of Atonement.

22 He put the table in the tent of meeting, on the north side of the tabernacle, outside the veil,
i.e., the Holy Place. Only the priests could enter.

23 and arranged the bread on it before the LORD, as the LORD had commanded Moses. 24 He put the lampstand in the tent of meeting, opposite the table on the south side of the tabernacle, 25 and set up the lamps before the LORD, as the LORD had commanded Moses. 26 He put the golden altar in the tent of meeting before the veil, 27and burned fragrant incense on it, as the LORD had commanded Moses.
The golden altar of incense was located right in front of the veil that separated the Holy Place from the Most Holy Place. Only the priest could see this altar, the lampstand, and the table of showbread inside the Holy Place.

There were two veils according to Heb 9. And as you see only those that could see inside the Holy place - could see the Altar of incense that was in front of the veil dividing the Holy Place from the Most Holy Place. Heb 9 NASB is pretty helpful in that regard.

It does not appear that God has a use for such a thing.
You are right, God does not have a use for a third temple as Christ has fore-filled that purpose, but the unbelieving Jews will see a use for it because they never accepted Christ as their Lord and the true king of Israel. The temple is the centerpiece of their religion which will unify Israel with a patriotic passion. The unbelieving Jews will get endorsement from the Anti-Christ to build the third temple, but it won't have the Ark of the Covenant or be filled with the spirit of God, but rather be used by that Anti-Christ to proclaim himself as God and king of Israel. A frightening scenario indeed.

I agree but they ( the Jewish people ) are ready to rebuild, also in the end of days prophecy there are passages where a temple seem necessary. it speaks about;
Daniel 9:27 (New International Version): "He will confirm a covenant with many for one 'seven.' In the middle of the 'seven' he will put an end to sacrifice and offering. And at the temple he will set up an abomination that causes desolation, until the end that is decreed is poured out on him."
2 Thessalonians 2:3-4 (New International Version): "Don’t let anyone deceive you in any way, for that day will not come until the rebellion occurs and the man of lawlessness is revealed, the man doomed to destruction. He will oppose and will exalt himself over everything that is called God or is worshiped, so that he sets himself up in God’s temple, proclaiming himself to be God."
Revelation 11:1-2 (New International Version): "I was given a reed like a measuring rod and was told, 'Go and measure the temple of God and the altar, with its worshipers. But exclude the outer court; do not measure it, because it has been given to the Gentiles. They will trample on the holy city for 42 months."
