Im just curious what others will say. Im not trying to stir up a debate though. Just want opinions.

My opinion is that if we gather here in His name He is with us. If we just show up with our opinions without invoking His name or even believing in him at all, then he probably won't take a personal interest.

It looks like that verse assures the followers that God will always be with them. That's about it. It says nothing about churches, sacraments, salvation, or most everything else that people sometimes credit that verse with settling.

The context does seem to indicate the passage's primary relevance is in regard to church discipline (cf., vv. 15 ff.), not merely about God's presence amongst and within his followers (although it certainly does not exclude that reality).

Is God among us as we gather online?

Matthew 18:20 For where two or three are gathered together in My name, I am there in the midst of them.”

Are we not the temple of the Holy Spirit ???

Could God ever be apart from His children ???

On one hand we have the Church (Body of Christ) present in all authentic Christians. On the other the Holy Spirit embodies each person.

Of course he is here, he is omnipresent, everywhere at once. Whether He is active/interactive is another matter. However, you specifically mentioned gathered in His name, that would be in the name of Jesus and I don't know about you all but I can feel His presence and a degree of sense of His power just writing that name. It's my belief that writing His name would get His attention, it's part of why I write it so often. He certainly hears our prayers and knows our thoughts, we can't write a prayer without Him knowing it.. And I can tell you this, if He did not want me here, he would make that known to me in some way, if only through the power of discernment.

Seriously though, we are gathered in spirit here on this forum. No reason to believe he is not among us as well. Just because he is present doesn't automatically mean our conversations will be seasoned with salt though...

Have you ever looked at the context of that verse?

Being gathered in his name isn't just invoking his name. It requires that that those invoking him be sincere in seeking truth and in dispensing truth and not harboring wordly attitudes. If not then the gathering will grieve the holy spirit.
How did you go about link those two verses together?

I am not linking them. They appear as they are in the Bible. If you have any objection to their application to the subject at hand then please explain.

1 Thessalonians 5:19 (ESV)

19 Do not quench the Spirit.

What does it mean to grieve / quench the Holy Spirit?
We grieve the Spirit by living like the pagans (4:17-19), by lying (4:25), by being angry (4:26-27), by stealing (4:28), by cursing (4:29), by being bitter (4:31), by being unforgiving (4:32), and by being sexually immoral (5:3-5). To grieve the Spirit is to act out in a sinful manner, whether it is in thought only or in both thought and deed.
