where to get book published??

hi! i am fairly new to cf and definately new to this forum. i have had a great idea for a children's book...even have an illistrator. problem is, i have NO clue where to start. can anyone give me pointers?? i dont even know in what form i am supposed to send it to the publisher in (that is assuming i had one...lol). i am just clueless and need some help! thank you so much!

What genre? How many words? What first-run printing goal (a realistic one) do you have in mind?

Well I'm not completely sure what you have here but I'd think that working with an agent ought to be easier than going directly to a publisher. In the US it seems like that's generally what people do.

Many agents won't represent you unless you've been published.

Many publishers won't read your work unless you have an agent.

It's a vicious circle.

Yeah, but... lots of scams out there. Lots and lots of scams. Before you submit anything to a "writing contest", check it out very, very carefully.

You could always try www.lulu.com. I think that's the site. It's a self-publishing site My mom has a few romance books she's written on there.

yeah lulu.com is good. I published my first book on there (go there and type in AJ Withrow). My book doesn't have illistration like pictures or anything like what your talking about, so I don't know how doing illustration will work on there, but still if you look into it and stuff, you'd probably be able to figure out how to work with it on there

The nice thing about Lulu.com is you can market your book(s) on sites like Amazon.com and B&N.com

Trying picking up a copy of writers digest (both the book and magazine).

The magazine will help with some of the technicalities and also with just plain getting your creative juices flowing.

The book is published yearly and lists literally thousands upon thousands of publishers, their basic writing guidelines, sometimes the format that your manuscript and cover letter should be in, and their address. It will also give you a short blurb on what they expect to see for their reading audiences. And sometimes what they will not even bother to read. Also included in the yearly book are a lot of the major writing scholarships, interns, and contests.
