I've been a christian for a little over 3 years now, but I've never read the bible.

I just don't know where to start.

Should I start at Genesis to get a better understanding OF the bible. Or start at The book of John like other people have suggested?

Please help:)

God Bless!

Hey :) I agree start in the new testament, but read the old testament as well. Nothing says you cant read both at the same time. John is a very good place to start, I see you are a pentacostal I think you will also find 1 Corinthians a good read. And yes reading God's word is a great way to walk closer with him. Pray for the truth, as you have probably noticed there are many twisted doctrines out there. If God shows you the truth through his word things become that much better. one more tip, try to read every day even if it's just 1 chapter. I achieve this by making sure the last thing I do before I sleep is read the Bible and have a great 1 to 1 prayer time with God. The more time you spend in God's word the more you will enjoy coming back to it also your love for God will grow by leaps and bounds.

If you read the 4 Gospels, Matthew, Mark, Luke and John - it will give you a good idea of how the faith developed. Keep in mind they were written after 400 years of silence where there were no prophets - called the 400 silent years. The Bible was written over a period of 1,600 years - lots of cultures, but you will see that Jesus is the same yesterday, today and forever.

The easiest place to start in the OT is Psalms. Then Proverbs.

The four gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke, John) are very similar, so pick one, and then move on to the rest of the New Testament.

Some people criticize opening the Bible to a different spot every day, but I did that for the first few years I was a Christian, and God always brought something meaningful that pertained to my day.

If you do this, make sure you don't turn it into a horoscope-like predictor of your day... there are plenty of areas in the Bible that wouldn't be appropriate. For instance, most of Job was written about bad advice given. Song of Solomon might lead you to think God is approving an affair. Jonah running from God ... Abraham lying about his wife... stories need to be taken in context.

It's great that you are deciding to learn what God has to say. Go for it!

Keep in mind that the bible is not one book but a collection of books each one the inspired Word of God so all of it is good. But if I were you I would start by reading either the Gospel of Matthew or Luke..much of those two is based on the Gospel of Mark and both give a good account of Jesus's life and teachings. While you are doing this read and reflect on one of the Psalms each day and later one of the Proverbs each day. Eventually you'll want to read all of the bible (all books) but this way you have a good start on the message of Jesus as well as inspiration on how to pray and how to live. Do this until you get to the place where you sense it is alright to proceed as you feel led.

Right now I am in my sixth year of going through the entire bible with daily readings starting with Genesis going all the way to Revelation in a year..but I don't recommend that at first because you can get weighed down in all of the numbers, history, geneologies, lists, etc. Start with reading a chapter or two a day of the Gospels.Stop and ponder how the message applies to you and how your life can be changed. In other words you'll want to apply what your read to your daily living. There is more to reading God's Word than reading other books. I still pray, "Lord, let me hear what you are saying to me today in this reading, etc." It works well for me. Peace and blessings..to you and Happy Thanksgiving tomorrow!
