This is a hard one to explain. There is no missing dollar. It's true that the men each paid $9 (totalling $27)

This Is what makes it confusing
"Add to that the $2 the bellboy kept and the total is $29."

You should sutract (not add) the $2 the bellboy stole and you'd have $25. $30 should not even figure into the equation

Like I said, it's hard to explain, and I probably did not do a very good job of it

yeah, it is all in the method of solving it....But I do think taxes kill us!

true the men each payed 9 dollars but the room was 25 dollars and each men got 3 dollars and the bell boy kept 2 dollars which still equals 30 dollars. the 9 dollars adding up to 27 is just a throw off.
