very tacky and sophmoric. well done.
of course we have done nothing wrong on a national scale in this disaster. as bush said more than a year ago on "meet the press", he could think of no mistakes his administration had made to date. none.
what the leaders of LA. did to try to stave this off is to beg and plead for the money in the budget allocated for the shoring up and finishing of the levees not be diverted for use in iraq. they failed. shame on them. it is their weakness in the face of the iraq war juggernaut that has caused the horror in n.o.
i am nauseated by the posts that have no understanding regarding what happens when people are desperate and fearing for their lives. from the safety of their homes they are passing judgment on people who have been suddenly removed from every meager support they may have had. they have lived in total mystery about why they had been foresaken. they were not watching tv, getting constant updates. they were alone. in the most extreme sense, they were completely, utterly alone. this is the type of scene that will challenge the most devout person's faith. if Jesus is not to be condemned for crying out "Father, why have you foresaken me?" then how do we have the audacity to condemn these mere mortals when they show their humanity, their weakness, their fear.
there but for the grace of God go i. would we meet the unforgiving standards that some on this thread have set for people who were staring death in the face? what would i do to feed or protect my child if i thought i was on my own?
for those who would condemn the press, without them there would have been even less action to relieve these people. they did their job, turning the spotlight on a situation that did not seem to be getting the urgent attention it needed. as far as reporters not helping, we don't know if they dug in with both hands but chose to turn the cameras off so as not to make their actions appear to be grandstanding. kind of like what Christ told us to do when we pray. it is not a show, it is a devotion, a form of worship. we don't know if they did not do this either. that's the point. you don't know. what we DO know is they often times were courageous going into areas that relief workers were too afraid to enter and brought back images that made the fear of entering the area an unacceptable excuse for not taking the risk.
if the explanation for this type of holier-than-thou finger pointing is "tough love", you can keep it. it is simply self absorbed hubris and cruelty. have the people who have been victimized by this disaster not endured enough or do you really think they should be told that their intense suffering is their fault? wwJd? well, these people right now are the least of us. does that suggest a course of Christian response?
