Of course the world will help us to some extent, we are their best customers. If our economy fails, the world is going to feel it big time. All the oil in the world will not help us right now-refined or otherwise since the government will probably just manipulate the amount released to monopolize their profits...

The threads & posts using this tragedy to score a few political points against the opposition, however, will not.

Not that, that has the tineist minuest bit at all to do with what she was addressing.

I think you are mistaken regarding concern posts for disaster relief. Talk about partisan.

We really do look like idiots to the rest of the world right now since we cant even take care of ourselves on a natural disaster.

I'm not worried about whether we look stupid or not to the rest of the world, people need real help and taking care of our egos should be the last thing on our agendas.

Weren't these people ordered to leave before the hurricane hit?

My heart goes out to those who were unable to leave because they are elderly or infirm or under medical care or who lacked the means to leave the area. However earlier today I saw several people on the news who said that they could have left but decided to ride out the storm. Then they complained because they are not being provided with food, water and shelter. I'm sorry, but I have no sympathy for such idiots.

very tacky and sophmoric. well done.
of course we have done nothing wrong on a national scale in this disaster. as bush said more than a year ago on "meet the press", he could think of no mistakes his administration had made to date. none.
what the leaders of LA. did to try to stave this off is to beg and plead for the money in the budget allocated for the shoring up and finishing of the levees not be diverted for use in iraq. they failed. shame on them. it is their weakness in the face of the iraq war juggernaut that has caused the horror in n.o.
i am nauseated by the posts that have no understanding regarding what happens when people are desperate and fearing for their lives. from the safety of their homes they are passing judgment on people who have been suddenly removed from every meager support they may have had. they have lived in total mystery about why they had been foresaken. they were not watching tv, getting constant updates. they were alone. in the most extreme sense, they were completely, utterly alone. this is the type of scene that will challenge the most devout person's faith. if Jesus is not to be condemned for crying out "Father, why have you foresaken me?" then how do we have the audacity to condemn these mere mortals when they show their humanity, their weakness, their fear.
there but for the grace of God go i. would we meet the unforgiving standards that some on this thread have set for people who were staring death in the face? what would i do to feed or protect my child if i thought i was on my own?
for those who would condemn the press, without them there would have been even less action to relieve these people. they did their job, turning the spotlight on a situation that did not seem to be getting the urgent attention it needed. as far as reporters not helping, we don't know if they dug in with both hands but chose to turn the cameras off so as not to make their actions appear to be grandstanding. kind of like what Christ told us to do when we pray. it is not a show, it is a devotion, a form of worship. we don't know if they did not do this either. that's the point. you don't know. what we DO know is they often times were courageous going into areas that relief workers were too afraid to enter and brought back images that made the fear of entering the area an unacceptable excuse for not taking the risk.
if the explanation for this type of holier-than-thou finger pointing is "tough love", you can keep it. it is simply self absorbed hubris and cruelty. have the people who have been victimized by this disaster not endured enough or do you really think they should be told that their intense suffering is their fault? wwJd? well, these people right now are the least of us. does that suggest a course of Christian response?

In answer to the OP, yeah, I'm mad as heck and then some. But even more so, its really reinforcing in me what I have known for years: when the turds hit the fan, you are on your own. Don't rely on anyone but you to help yourself in this world. I hope people take from all this that they can't rely on the government, ANY government, to come save them. If you do, your going to end up like the poor bastages in New Orleans, waiting on a rooftop for help thats never going to come. They thought it couldn't happen to them either.

Kind of like you can't depend on the police to protect you from a criminal assault. They aren't under legal obligation to keep every person safe. You can't do anything about it afterwards if they don't get there in time.

As I said before, I have a great deal of sympathy for those who were unable to leave for a variety of reasons. Everything possible should be done to help them. However, I have no sympathy for those who decided to ride out a category 5 hurricane and who are now demanding that the government rescue them and provide them with food, water and shelter. These people were ordered to leave and refused. Now they are requiring that others put their lives at risk to resque them from their own foolishness.

No, because if the government ordered me to evacuate and I had the ability to do so, I would leave.

I'm very angry right now. We are the wealthiest nation on earth and we can't even provide for our own people. NBC Today show was just airing reports on how horrible the conditions are at the New Orleans Convention Center, and how they STILL have no food or water. People are DYING. The NBC Today Show news anchor just said he saw THREE people dying JUST THIS MORNING.

What the HECK is going on? What if this were a terrorist attack? We'd be screwed! And Bush is supposed to be the protector of the people? Obviously he's proven to be the complete opposite. Worse, the official word from the White House is that we are NOT REQUESTING the aid of other countires. Canada, France, Venezuela, Russia - all have offered help. But we rejected it. Why?

Why can't we care for our OWN PEOPLE here in the RICHEST COUNTRY ON EARTH!!

I guess you could say I'm extremely angered as well - I have been ever since Tuesday or so. People wait on the streets, in the heat, with no food or water, no shelter, and so forth. Conditions continue to worsen, people are still trapped on rooftops. At least some supplies were sent in today, and some calm has reportedly been restored.

Oh, and speaking of the help offers from other countries: officials have claimed that NO offer has or will be denied.

First, sorry for double-posting.

Some couldn't evacuate (such as the poor). Others may have thought that they could withstand such a storm, but of course, they were wrong. In any case, they are PEOPLE, just like us, so they shouldn't be left to die, no matter what choice they made.

In my last post I said that "I have a great deal of sympathy for those who were unable to leave for a variety of reasons. Everything possible should be done to help them." However those who decided to stay are in a much different position. I'm not saying that we should simply let these people die. However, these people should stop winning about how they deserve government-provided water, food and shelter when they willing put themselves in harm's way. Let's take care of the people who couldn't leave first (like those in hospitals), then go after the idiots.

To an extent, I agree. In regards to those in hospitals: isn't it very, very sad that patients and staff were shot at when trying to evacuate? The ones who try to harm others during this hard time are the ones who should be called 'idiots', in my opinion.
