I rarely buy books at all, unless it's something that I know I'm going to make notes in and highlight (such as a travel guide), or something that I know I'll want to keep on my shelves forever (LotR, HP, etc.).

Mostly I just check out books from the library, or borrow them from friends.

eBay. I've found the best deals in book lots. I managed to collect two lots of a particular series (okay it was Nancy Drew and Hardy Boys Supermysteries  ), even with postage from the US to Australia nearly as much as the books cost, it was still cheaper than buying each book second hand here in Australia. I probably saved about AU$200 doing it this way.

Usually Walden, Barnes & Noble, or Walmart. Walden Books is definately my favorite though. Only bad thing is you spend 15 on a book, come home set it on the desk and leave the room.. When you come back in your cat is on top of the desk biting little holes in the corner of the cover and first few pages. ARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGG!!!!!!!!!!
