Ok...it is apparent that people have been coming to this island for a long while now. We have the people who built the `4 toed statue', the survivors of the `Black Rock' (from at least eighty or a hundred years ago); `Adam and Eve' from about fifty years previous...these just being the ones we know about.

Now...assuming these people stayed on the island, had women in the ranks, were of the right age, and in reasonably good health, they should have had kids. And those kids, in turn, should have had more kids. By the time the lostaways crashed, there should have been entire communities with denizens ranging from toddlers to elderly.

Instead, we have the `Others' - and from what we've seen of them, they have no kids of their own. They also have a near monomania with kids and fertility - early on in the series, we learn they kidnapped Danielles baby (apparently adopted by a high ranking Other) and did kidnap Clair for her baby. Some of the very first people they grabbed from the tail section were the kids. Later on, we learned that they lured Juliette, who was apparently working on a radical fertility treatment to the island.

So...unless a women was pregnant before coming to the island, it looks like kids are not in the cards. Something about the island causes sterility?

That's what it sounds like to me, and I think it's why they brought Juliette to the island just five years ago.

I think there were kids being born at some point. I sense for some reason that Benry wasn't lying when he told Jack he'd been on the island his whole life. Maybe something happened during the "incident" that caused sterility, and that's why they needed Juliette.

No, Sun was pregnant before she got to the island. The popular theory is that the baby is not Jin's, since he was the one who was infertile and she had been having an affair.

Assuming that the Lost Experience material is canonical, the island itself doesn't cause sterility. There were Aboriginal/Pacific Islander villages that DHARMA infected with some kind of virus, according to the Sri Lanka video. So maybe sterility was caused by DHARMA.

I think the main reason they kidnap children is to "program" them. They're always talking about getting "good" people. Children who don't have preconcieved notions about things are easier to teach about whatever the hell DHARMA/the Others are all about. Mikhail said something about the castaways being unable to understand.

That seems unlikely to me, actually. Sun finds out she's pregnant on day 60, two full months after crashing on the island. Wouldn't she have noticed before then if she was pregnant before the flight?

Or is there some evidence I'm unaware of?

Well, according to the Lostpedia timeline, Jin and Sun are reunited after the raft escape attempt on November 8, and she finds out she is pregnant on November 20 (island time). As far as I can remember - I could be wrong though - that was the only time we are aware of them having sex on the island. Less than two weeks seems like too short a period of time for her to have gotten pregnant by him, realized it enough to take a test, and have the test turn up positive.

All jokes aside - What about the kids we saw with the Others when Jack was in the bear cage? With Cindy apparently in charge of them or taking care of them somehow. They all seemed, clean, happy, and in good health. Until Jack started yelling at them of course

Those kids were on the plane when it crashed. They were also among the very first taken by the Others.

It may have, yeah, but the time frame between when they had sex and she found out she was pregnant is still way too short - less than two weeks. That is, of course, assuming they did not have sex previously on the island and we just weren't aware of it.

To me at least, the two-week timeline seems more likely than the two-month one. But I'm a guy, so you can't take my word for it
